Some training days are more interesting than others. We started with Eli the Aussie taking a stroll rather than hunting for his victim. His handler was about ready to put him back in the truck since he obviously wasn't searching when he ran into the scent cone of his victim. THEN he began his search and found the victim. This counts as a failure because a good search dog begins hunting as soon as he is told to do so. Then we were introduced to a lovely 4-month old Dutchie puppy related to Kathy's two dogs. A little blood was spilled with those sharp puppy teeth! As all this was happening, the sky got darker and darker. When the storm finally arrived, complete with hail, 3 people and Kathy's 10 month old pup were a quarter mile away from the vehicles. They ended up hiding under a tree to avoid the hail, and they were all soaked to the skin when they finally made it back to the vehicles. An interesting day!

A hot and windy day, but at least the trees have finally leafed out. We trained near Bear Butte (in the background). Cowboy got to hunt for a trail biker's lost cell phone, although I'm sure he thought he was searching for HR. The cell was finally located at his own home through his girlfriend's "find my phone" app. Well, it was a good negative search. Eli did find/refind drills rather than a long search.

We spent a lot of time helping Kathy getting her ginormous new Ruffland Titan crate into her vehicle so her other XL crate would also fit, along with all her dog training gear. AND we also did a lot of odor detection in Deadwood. Teamwork!

The dogs got to spend a lot of time playing on Sunday, along with searching for odor and obedience.

Sunday was a beautiful day to have the dogs explore the Whitewood City Park. Hides were placed in a culvert, a BBQ grill, on the ground, in hollow tree trunks, high up in bushes, and higher up on a big tree trunk. Eli got to search for two living victims, and Qisme had her first experience hunting for a living person.

We went training at the Belle Fourche rodeo grounds. The dogs searched in a large open seating arena. Air currents took odor all over the place, so it was good exercise for all.
