Love the energy they bring into the studio 💗 they also need me to make a swear jar 🤣🤣🤣 they’ve learned that Pilates is more difficult than it looks to anyone watching. It’s true, you can be practicing Pilates and be over 60.

Loved my 30 minute workout on the Ladder Barrel today! As the owner and instructor it’s hard to get out of the studio for a private session or class so I keep up with my Pilates practice with ! I listened and watched along to someone I admire in the Pilates space, Lesley Logan. A few new variations and I took a small break to stretch out my neck when I needed to…right about when she cued for Around the World 😂 IYKYK 😂 Thank you .logan - when in Kansas please stop by!!!

Revised the early morning schedule to add in 2 more choices for your Pilates self-care time! Already posted in Vagaro, why not sign up and start this Thursday 5/7??

Intro to Pilates (30 min) class at 7:45 am is terrific for those new to Pilates to become familiar with the safety aspects of the equipment and learn the fundamental Pilates exercises. Thursdays Intro class is on the reformer, while Wednesdays alternates every week between reformer and tower!

Classical Pilates class is a 50-minute open-level ability class which starts at 8:30am. Ideally you’ve done at least 5 Novice Apparatus classes here before you venture into this class. However—I know how to teach to the bodies in class. If I don’t know your body, we’ll find out together how you handle the Classical Pilates beginner reformer order.

Private sessions available after 1:30pm on Thursdays. Book online to reserve the whole studio to yourself for 30 or 50-minutes!

Leave the studio feeling taller than when you got here! Yay, it’s the Tower apparatus on Tuesdays and Wednesday til midday.

If your shoulders like to round forward this move called Long Back Stretch can help offset that! You’ll be stretching and strengthening the pectoral muscles as well as the shoulder girdle.

And you’ll find tiny muscles in your forearms and perhaps a bit more space between your rib-hip waistline area 💫

The spring tension with the roll back bar allows me to find my ideal range. What that looks like for you could be different! The farther someone is from the spring attachment point the more tension is created. Some Pilates moves this is more supportive, for Long Back Stretch it’s is not! Being out farther from the Tower means the movement is harder. I want to keep proper form with a decent amount of strain. Not so far out that my back arches or my left shoulder screams at me. ☮️

Shocking truth: there’s more than one type of Pilates!

There’s Classical Pilates, the studios and instructors that adhere to Joe Pilates order and prefer to use apparatus like he himself created. That’s the type of equipment found at Skylight Pilates. Check out earlier posts or main website to scope the apparatus used for a comparison!

There’s Contemporary Pilates, which evolved later. Tweaks were made to the exercises and the equipment as I discuss with the show and tell video of my personal reformer/cadillac combo I use at home.

Then there’s Pilates inspired stuff, which could be all over the place and not regulated and may include no actual Pilates exercises at all. Like doing timed reps of things, as many reps of possible in 30 seconds with no regard to form. This type saddens me greatly.

I encourage folks to try both Classical and Contemporary Pilates and then decide which they prefer. I started out in the Contemporary and gradually converted to Classical 👩‍🎓

Some little differences I’ve noticed in regards to studio atmosphere as well:

- no music is played in a Classical studio (or if there is it is soft in the background)
- Contemporary studios may require grip socks
- Contemporary studios might offer only reformer apparatus, which is only one of several pieces in the Pilates system.
- Classical studios will teach you the names of the exercises (like the Hundred!)

Exercise: Footwork
Set up: Tower apparatus, Push through bar with safety chain on and spring attached from down below the mat.

Feel powerful, amazing strength in every muscle of your legs with this Intermediate level set on the Tower apparatus.

Staying in hip distance parallel, my feet change placement four times.

-Toes pointed and on the bar
-Arches on bar, wrapping toes and heels around
-Heels on, toes flexed towards shins
-Point/Flex combo for tendon stretch

5 reps for precision, 5 more continuous for flow.

Followed with a quick stretch and then a fun variation of Hundred 💯💯💯🤍🤍🤍

Sped this up 🙃🙃🙃 really took about 4 whole minutes. At one point I even pushed my arms heavier into the mat during footwork to keep my upper body active.

Two years ago the studio opened for its first customers in charming De Soto, KS!

Lots of challenges were faced and of course some days busier than others. I kept showing up and more and more people became interested in doing Pilates here. I knew it would take time to develop a loyal client base and I’m truly grateful for every single human that has practiced Pilates here.

I’m pleased to announce I’ve extended my rental agreement, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. I can’t wait to see how many more bodies I share the magic of Pilates with 🙌🥳💗
