We collaborated with our friends at the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities to host an informational event about accessibility in your Five Rivers MetroParks. We heard from MetroParks educator and naturalist Joshua York about where to visit in MetroParks, in addition to enjoying a tram tour and wildflower walk! A huge thank you to Square One Salon and Spa and The Rubi Girls for supporting the Five Rivers MetroParks Foundation. Last April, they hosted Earth Month fundraisers that support really important projects at Possum Creek MetroPark. Read all about it below! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™โฌ‡๏ธ

A huge thank you to Square One Salon and Spa and the The Rubi Girls for their incredible support during Square One's Earth Month Fundraiser!

Thanks to the generosity of Square One's staff, clients, and community supporters, funds were raised in support of the Possum Creek ADA Trail and Fishing Outcrops Project, making the outdoors more accessible for people of all abilities.

We are especially grateful to the Rubi Girls for partnering in this effort and helping make a lasting impact on our parks and community.

Together, you're helping create more opportunities for everyone to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of Possum Creek MetroPark. Thank you for making a difference! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŽฃโ™ฟ

It takes teamwork to create healthy habitats, and our community is a big part of that. A huge shout out to an Eagle Scout who created 30 fish attractors as his project. MetroParks rangers and park staff sunk these structures into Possum Creekโ€™s Fishing Pond (1) to help support life at the lowest bottom of the aquatic food chain. This means healthier fish, too.

In 2024, MetroParks began stocking native fish at Possum Creekโ€™s ponds, including large mouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and minnows. Now, our conservation team is focused on enhancing habitat to support sustainable fish populations. These efforts include adding native plants, such as pond lilies, rises and pickerelweed and reducing mowing along the pondโ€™s edges. Now that mowing has stopped along select sections, vegetation has grown which helps with erosion, improves water quality and increases biodiversity. Next step โ€“ invasive species management to keep those pesky plants away from the pond!

There's one really easy thing you can do to keep from putting wildlife in danger: pick up your line. ๐ŸŽฃ Fishing GOAT and outdoor recreation program coordinator, Thomas, shares a little bit about our fishing line recycling program. This program helps keep wildlife -especially birds- from getting tangled up in line litter.

Find more fun ways you can protect birds by participating in MetroParks Birding Challenge. Link in comment to register and learn more.
