Our Club hangs posters educating on Cognitive Bias and logical fallacies. We believe one must be able to not fall prey to them, thus freeing our minds more and opening them to logically think.
Here is a thinking fallacy we always combat while teaching self defense. It is called the bystander effect and it can be a bias with deadly consequences.
Bystander Effect- You presume someone else is going to do something in an emergency situation.
Example: You are attacked violently and you presume screaming for help will save you, or calling 911 will prevent it from happening.
The cold hard fact is YOU are your own first responder and in charge of your own safety.
We get a lot of parents who want us to teach their kids how to defend themselves. But when we ask the parent if they can defend themselves they either say no, or lie and act tough but have no ability to defend themselves. We usually follow up with the joke, what if something bad happens are you pushing your kid to the front to defend you? How about family lessons then? Most get ashamed and just walk away, which is sad because they were given more truth in that conversation than they do in their day to day lives.
So have you thought about the need for safety? Do you want to train yourself and become more prepared? Then contact us, we will gladly work out something to help you get prepared.
