Vinyasa is a style of yoga that connects breath with movement, creating a flowing sequence of poses. The word vinyasa comes from Sanskrit and is often interpreted as βto place in a special way.β
In a Vinyasa yoga class, movements are intentionally coordinated with the breath. For example, you might inhale as you lift your arms overhead and exhale as you fold forward.
What makes Vinyasa yoga unique?
- Breath-centered movement: Each movement is connected to an inhale or exhale.
- Flowing sequences: Poses transition smoothly from one to another.
- Creative sequencing: Unlike styles with fixed sequences, Vinyasa classes can vary depending on the teacher, theme, or intended outcome.
- Strength and flexibility: The practice can develop muscular strength, mobility, balance, and body awareness.
- Moving meditation: Focusing on breath and movement encourages mindfulness and presence.
