Sorry for the late race update. The double feature day at Atlanta Motorsports Park didn't go as planned, but probably sums up up our racing career. Trey was pretty quick, 5th fastest, in the first round of practice and we tried something for the second round to try to gain a little bit more. While that didn't work, he had an off in turn 10 which resulted in the car snapping around and he backed it in the wall at probably 70mph. This hurt the car bad. Snapped the left rear shock and broke the left rear trailing arm. The panhard bar was also bent. Not sure if a mechanical failure caused the spin, but it was pretty violent. The hit was hard enough that the coolant temperature sensor connector became disconnected and broke the ground wire on the motor. When the car was dropped off from the wrecker, I figured we were done. Our crew chief took a deep breath and said, "I can't get you in the first race, but I'll do everything I can for you to make the second" Had to replace the rear end housing, left rear shock, trailing arm, wheel and tire, panhard bar, and left front steering arm. No time to check any adjustments and got 1 rivet in rear fender to hold it on. Got on track during pace lap, but was probably 15 seconds behind the field when they took the green. He start last, 25th, and in 8 laps finished 16th. 1 more lap and he felt he could've got 3 more spots.
Being this is our last race barring a run on the Charlotte Roval if it happens, what a way to go out. Definitely memorable. Our team started as just a dad (crew chief) and son (driver) in a backyard shop racing with some really good drivers, some racing on Sundays, with great funding. We never missed a race due to a mechanical problem, and counting Sat, I believe the first feature was only our 2nd race ever missed on a double feature day due to a wreck over our entire career. Most people were surprised I was going to try to make the 2nd feature and shocked I actually got it done. Not exactly sure of the final road course series standings, but I believe he still finished 4th overall.
It's been a hell of a ride, met so many amazing people in the racing community. Not sure what's next, but these memories will last forever. Gonna be hard to walk away.
