“Michael Silver has written a beautiful study about a group of men who started out on a journey with a shared goal of being one of the handful of people each generation who revolutionize their craft.”

The preceding was praise of Michael Silver’s new book, The Why Is Everything, from fellow sports writer Seth Wickersham. Silver’s knowledge of sports - and his mastery of the written word - has earned him scores of journalist awards and Emmy nominations.

After a long career working for the likes of Yahoo! Sports, NFL Network and Sports Illustrated, Silver settled down in Davis, CA. And with his brand new book, chronicling the new breed of head coach in the NFL, Silver will meet the sport-loving Davis public downtown, at The Avid Reader, on September 24th, starting at 6:30pm.

No McCaffrey, no problem.

With the defending NFC Champs ending a tumultuous offseason with an opening game at home in Santa Clara, the San Francisco 49ers benched the offensive player of the year at the 11th hour. That, combined with expected rust from All-Pro holdouts Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, many pundits believed the New York Jets could pull off the upset.

Enter one Jordan Ponchez Mason.

The 3rd year back out of Georgia Tech has been an unheralded backup, having logged a combined 464 yards on 83 carries his last two seasons with the 49ers. His skillset, however, fits the offense like a glove - a quick, one-move-and-go running style - and has proven useful behind McCaffrey for spells during the regular season.

In what ended up being his first career start, Mason did not disappoint. He saw open space everywhere, and made chunk play after chunk play. Controlling the clock for the majority of the contest, Mason finished with a game-high 28 carries, 147 rushing yards and a touchdown. He was the lynchpin in what ended up being a 32-19 beat down in the bright lights of Monday Night Football.

While we will probably see a lot of CMC this season, Jordan Mason proved he can step up when his number is called.

It was only a week ago where the 49ers’ offseason looked like it was going to fall off of a cliff.

WR Brandon Aiyuk and LT Trent Williams - two irreplaceable cogs in Kyle Shanahan’s vaunted offense - were still holding out, with no real end in sight. Aiyuk, in particular, was rumored to be traded anywhere from New England to Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Williams was unhappy over the terms of the last years of his current contract, with no guaranteed money in place. Both were real threats to not only miss games, but possibly miss a sizable chunk of the season - putting the defending NFC champions’ season into major disarray.

Fast-forward to today - the 49ers front office managed to get them both signed to new contracts. Aiyuk agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension, while Big Trent received a reworked deal that would give him $48 million guaranteed at signing.

After all that, the 49ers can finally put all of their focus on Monday Night Football, where they play their first game of the regular season against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.

On February 14, three days after his defense held the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs to 19 points and one offensive TD in regulation, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was relieved of his duties with the 49ers.

Many believe that Wilks, who ran the third-ranked defense in the league this past season, was a scapegoat for the 49ers’ Super Bowl loss. Most thought it was insane to fire someone who was held in high regard with no real replacement plans (Brandon Staley? 🤨 Bill Belichick? 🧐 Pete Carroll? 😐) in the wings.

It’s a fair question, after all - was Wilks made to be the fall guy after Shanahan, Lynch and Co. failed to win a Lombardi Trophy with all the talent in the world at their disposal?

Maybe. But here’s my take:

While his defense’s stats can’t be denied, there’s something to be said about how the year played out, and how he fit with the organization. After all, while the defense obviously functioned extremely well under Wilks, he was the only DC under Shanahan to call plays from the booth - while not necessarily a bad thing, culture (especially for the 49ers) matters. There was obviously a disconnect to start the year, and after their third straight loss midway through the season, the team practically forced Wilks onto the sidelines.

And while many believe he was fired because of the Super Bowl, it is sounding more and more like this was a more deep-rooted problem that was masked by the 49ers’ winning ways. After all, the defense in the NFC playoffs was downright frustrating to watch at times - the Lions, especially, were running all over the third-ranked run defense.

And when the 49ers needed a stop in the biggest of moments - up 3 in OT and the Chiefs driving - he couldn’t call the right play. Fair or not, that’s what happened.

Even aside from all that, I’ll say this last thing: Brock Purdy had been killed by naysayers all year, downplaying his offensive numbers because of the weapons at his disposal. Funny that we don’t do anything similar for a coordinator that had generational defensive talent at his. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The loss still stings.

It’s safe to say that, for most of us, it hurts, even after almost a week. If you are, heed the words of our fullback, - It might put things in perspective, and get you ready for next season:

“We’re going to put ourselves out there because that’s what you do as a professional athlete. You’re vulnerable in putting yourself out there on the biggest stage in the world. And when you come up short, it hurts. But we embrace that. We relish that. Because what’s the alternative? That’s what living is. It’s taking a chance and putting yourself out there.

“Because if you don’t do that, you’re never going to have the opportunity to really experience true greatness and true accomplishment. That’s just part of the gig. I think having an understanding of that and just accepting that helps in these situations when you do come up short, in being able to bounce back. Because you know that it sucks, but what else are you going to do? That’s how we’re bred. That’s how we’re going to work. It’s important to try and find the positives of it. Obviously you don’t feel any positivity right now. But there’s always a lesson to be learned in any of these losses, no matter how much they hurt. And i I think you can use that to fuel yourself and just grow stronger moving forward.”

Continuing a series of posts inspired by the pop culture influence of Taylor Swift with the NFL, I want to talk about some of the wives and girlfriends of 49ers players. This WAG has been together with a fan favorite ever since their college days. And their relationship, especially on social media, can stack up against the crust celebrity couples on the internet. I’m talking about Claire Kittle, wife of TE George Kittle.

The two met at the University of Iowa in 2012 - George was a freshman tight end for the football team, Claire was a freshman forward for the women’s basketball team. She was the third all-time leading scorer at her high school, but injuries derailed her college career. Meanwhile, George’s skill set as a blocking TE (and his connection with QB CJ Beathard) got him drafted to the 49ers in 2017.

After 6 years together, George proposed to Claire with the help of the 49ers - they set up a beach photo shoot as a ruse for George to surprise Claire - and the two were married in 2019. She has been a supportive wife ever since, regularly attending 49ers games while pursuing her own interests in fitness, social media and blogging/vlogging. She has owned and operated Claire Till Fitness since 2016, and has her own blog, letteyletsgo.com.

Continuing a series of posts inspired by the pop culture influence of Taylor Swift with the NFL, I want to talk about some of the wives and girlfriends of 49ers players. And considering this individual’s career, while we may live in Taylor’s world, she can’t say she once staked a claim over the entire Universe.

I’m talking about 2012 Miss Universe - and fiancée of 49ers OPOY Christian McCaffrey - Olivia Culpo.

Born in Rhode Island in May 8, 1992, Culpo was raised with a musical background, with both of her parents being musicians, and her being proficient in cello growing up. As a result, she played for a number of orchestras in her home state.

She entered, and won, her first beauty pageant in 2011 - which just so happened to be the Miss Rhode Island pageant, for the right to represent her state at that year’s Miss USA pageant. She ultimately won Miss USA on July 6, 2012, and won the 61st Miss Universe title in Las Vegas on December 19, 2012. Since then, she has made her way as a social media influencer, beauty product spokesperson, fashion model, and actress.

She started a relationship with the then-Carolina Panthers RB in 2019, after she apparently vowed never to date another professional athlete as a result of several failed relationships with athletes. The two met and followed each other on Instagram in early 2019. After being seen on a summer outing in Mexico that summer, their courtship was made “red carpet official” at the NFL Honors that year - 2 days before the 49ers’ ill-fated Super Bowl LIV.

She has been CMC’s ride-or-die ever since, especially after McCaffrey was traded to San Francisco in 2022. It wasn’t long after that, in April of last year, that the couple got engaged. She has been seen as a vocal supporter of her fiancé and the 49ers, even going so far as to offer buying a Super Bowl suite in Las Vegas for McCaffrey’s family.
