Boy was it a hot start to the Cane Creek Cup yesterday at Farris Memorial Park in Mayodan. 3 of our riders came out to the much delayed season opener. Brandon Hicks competing in Cat 1 30-39, TJ Wood in Cat 2 40-49, and Bryan Hight in Cat 3 50+. Not only was this the first race of the overall series but it was also race 1 of 3 for the USA Cycling NC State Championship. Getting a good result here was very important.

Cat 1 racers went off at 9:00 and had the benefit of cooler temperatures while Cat 2 started at 11:30, and Cat 3 started during the hottest part of the day at 1:30.

It was a great start to the season with Brandon taking the win, Bryan taking 8th, and TJ taking 17 in a packed field. Well earned results from everyone! Not easy racing with high temperatures and humidity.

From here the races come thick and fast due to the compressed schedule. Next up is Mazeppa Park on June 21.

That’s a wrap, folks! 10 races all over NC, SC and VA wrapped up and in the rear view mirror. With yesterday’s Sizzler race at Bur-Mil Park done and dusted the Southern Classic Mtb Series is now finished. Another great race and bookend to the season from The Greensboro Fat Tire Society on some trails that I love and know very well. I didn’t get the result I would have liked finishing 3rd but I got the one I expected. With training a lot over the last few weeks with vacation and traveling I knew I didn’t have the fitness to compete but I managed to have fun and enjoy the race.

I also got on the podium for the series today but it still wasn’t the step I wanted. I’m proud to have finished 2nd but having the top step so close it’s hard to not want more. After coming back to racing with 4 years off I should be happier with the result but that’s not me. I want to win! I was pleased all year with my bike handling and speed through technical parts of the trails but I lacked fitness and strength. This offseason will be focused on just that. Sharpening my handling and gaining strength and fitness. Still, I was always there and consistent all season long which is why I was able to come away in 2nd.

One thing I didn’t have to contend with was mechanical issues because The Cycle Path, LLC kept my Yeti Cycles SB100 running like a top. The kit from Classic Cycling kept me comfortable all season long. There’s a lot to be said for not having to think about you bibs or jersey during a race. Also thanks to Start2Finish Charlotte, DeFeet International, and Levine Law Group for their support this season. Most of all I’d like to thank Meganne Hicks. Her support, understanding, flexibility and love allows me to train and race. I absolutely couldn’t do it with you her.

Here’s some parting shots. Back at it next March!

Brandon

Jeff Franz made the trip down to Greenville, NC to race in the Capital Subaru of Greenville Criterium on Sunday, June 23rd. The event was hosted by Bicycle Post, and the race organizers did an excellent job of putting on a great event. The course was a 0.6 mile L-shaped course in downtown Greenville that proved fast and challenging.

In the Pro/1/2/3 race, Jeff formed a combine with long time friend and former teammate Darren Fuller to battle the much younger and strong field. From the race official's whistle sparks flew with several formidable attacks launched very early on. The field stayed in a long angry line for much of the early stages of the race, with no group gaining more than a few seconds' advantage on the hard charging peleton.

Jeff and Darren both fired what few bullets they had left after doing battle in the morning Masters race (report and video to follow soon), but were unsuccessful at either establishing a group, or bridging to the group of 6 that eventually found themselves clear of the field and free to fly. The breakaway lapped the field, and everyone was jockeying for position for the final sprint for the remaining 15 laps. With 9 to go, Darren launched a daring solo effort that saw him clear of the group until the final two corners on the short, tight course. Jeff finished a respectable 9th in the final gallop for the line, and Darren was able to salvage an 11th place finish despite his hard and heroic effort for the last 9 laps.

Check out the video from on board Jeff's bike. Unfortunately, his GoPro battery died about 37 minutes into the 1 hour affair, but he was still able to catch some fast and furious racing action.

Video from about the first half of the race. My GoPro battery died and I didn't capture the whole race. Small but fast field. Stayed fast until a break of 6 ...

Yesterday was a solid outing at the Southern Classic Mtb Series Battle of the Bikes in Mayodan, NC. This race was also the NC state championship which had been postponed due to heavy rains earlier this month. The course received rain all night Saturday so as you can imagine the trails were..... tricky. Some spots were fast and tacky, some were super slick peanut butter mud, and some were just down right mud holes. Really inconsistent conditions over the course of the 3.5 mile trail so you had to be ready for slide-ways action. I have to say that I really enjoyed these conditions! Fun and challenging. This was also the first time I’d ridden the trails built by Tony McGee and I really thought they were a blast. Fast flowing sections with well thought out rock gardens and stream crossings were awesome. I was skeptical of this trail system being worth of crowning a champion but the short a tricky laps were exactly the right place to pass out medals.

I ended up finishing 3rd on the day and am quite pleased with that result. Sure, I would have loved to be on a higher step of the podium but it simply wasn’t to be. The competition was great and they were better on the day. I rode to the best of my ability and didn’t make any mistakes either tactically or during the race. I think I had better bike handling but there were two long gravel road sections that gave the guys with better fitness the advantage. Bringing home a bronze was a great result and I couldn’t have conceded to a couple of better guys. That’s what I love about racing mountain bikes. We all compete but I sincerely enjoy riding and racing with these guys. Sure we all want to win but we’re happy when the other guys do well also.

I think the biggest challenge for me was getting the mud out of my new Hors Categorie bib shorts and jersey from Classic Cycling. These things are fantastic. Thanks to Muc-Off cleaning the Yeti Cycles SB100 was a breeze. Speaking of the SB100, what a fantastic machine. Thanks for all the support from The Cycle Path, LLC and for keeping the bike in top shape. Next up, Stump Jump in Spartanburg, SC this Sunday.
