WEEKLY RECAP – WEEK # 4
SEPTEMBER 10, 2026

The biggest news of the week had nothing to do with the scores, as lanes 17 & 18 had a breakdown, which was not able to be fixed, and thus the match between Leisure Lanes and Double Down Pro Shop was postponed. A very, very rare occurrence at Leisure, but things happen. The result left us with 56 bowlers competing this week. But – holy smokes – those 56 players tossed some amazing numbers. And just think – the list of top team and individual series and games below will perhaps be even more impressive once the make-up match scores are added in. Like Cal Whitmore used to say – higher scores mean more to talk about.

Let’s start with Joe Roseman. The 42-year-old southpaw tossed games of 258, 300 and 258 for a big 816 that was the high score in the house. Amazingly, this was his 53rd Tri-City Classic 800, and his 50th perfect game in the league. It was also his 86th time leading the Tri-City Classic in weekly scoring. Roseman’s big blast came with a brand new ball – drilled by brother Dusty just an hour or so before league started.

There were 3 perfect games this week. Sub Elias O’Hollaren tossed the first one – on 23 & 24, with Derrick Lewandowski hitting 300 a few minutes later. Joe Roseman’s 300 came in game #2.

This was the 44th night in league history with 3 perfect games. There have also been 11 nights with 4 300’s and 4 nights with 5 300’s in our league’s vast history. That means there have been 59 nights with at least 3 perfect games rolled.

Trophy King hauled in both team highs for the night, as they sandwiched a middle 1033 line between games of 980 and 872 for a solid 2885.

Besides Roseman’s 800, there were another 23 who topped 700, with 30 600’s and just a pair of sub-600 scores. The result was a 690.33 league average (which will be adjusted once the make-up match is recorded). That would make the 690.33 league average the 20th time the league averaged 690 or higher. (The highest league average in league history came on December 21, 2023 when the 56 league members averaged 705.51.)

Matt Schlueter told me scores wouldn’t be updated on leaguesecretary.com until the make-up match was bowled.

This week, there were 10 of the 56 bowlers who were at 770 or higher.

The Idle Hour Lanes vs The Other Bar was a heart-pounding match. The Other Bar won the opener by 7 pins (963-956) before Idle Hour came back to win game #2 by 7 pins (943-936). Idle Hour then captured the nightcap by 5 pins (836-831). That meant the 2 squads were separated by just 5 pins (2735-2730 in favor of Idle Hour), with teams splitting the points with 12 each.

Trophy King and Russo Outdoor Power also rolled to a 12-12 deadlock.

None of the 14 teams in action won all 3 games this week.

Despite all the big numbers this week, Idle Hour and Pound and Inch Fabric were the only 2 squads with all 12 individual games over 200. Each of the 14 teams had at least one 700 series in the lineup.

There was a half-dozen contests in which both players hit 700, and several of those matchups featured some insane bowling. These matchups included Joe Roseman (816) vs Derrick Lewandowski (776), Mike Baker (789) vs Jayson Miner (771), Josh Anderson (779) vs Bobby Werthmann (713), Kendric Siders (726) vs Mike Peters (724), Kevin Magnuson (779) vs Rob Dominacki (704) and Ben Slicklen (781) vs Michaela Kelly (708).

The Roseman-Lewandowski contest totaled 1592 pins, and that is now tied as the 22nd highest 2-player matchup in league annals. The other 1592 tally came nearly 46 years ago – way back on November 6, 1980, when Jim Wolfe (819) beat Dan Waline (773) for that 1592 2-player total. Wolfe's 819 was just the 3rd 800 in league history.

The Roseman-Lewandowski contest became the 5th head-to-head matchup in which each competitor rolled a 300, with Roseman being involved in 3 of those 5 matchups. The others were:

December 18, 2003 – Scott Rains (game 1) vs Chris Calhoun (game 2)
January 29, 2004 – Jeff Krager (game 1) vs Joe Roseman (game 3)
January 7, 2010 – Dave Miller vs Tye Pogar (both game 1)
January 20, 2022 – Joe Roseman (games 1 & 2) vs Austin Porter (game 3) (This was also the only individual contest in league history that featured a 300 in each of the 3 games.)

The Mike Baker (789) vs Jayson Miner (771) match was a display of excellence as well. Miner got the best of Baker in game #1 (287-276), while Baker fought back to edge Miner in game #2 (268-267). Scoring slowed a bit in the final stanza, as Baker topped Miner 245-217.

There was a unique father-son contest this week, as Mike Pelham (704) squared off against his son, Charlie (639). Charlie escaped getting swept, as he won game #2 by a single pin (225-224).

In just her 4th week as a league member, Whittney Morse enjoyed her first Tri-City Classic 700 – a fine 706 built on consistent games of 247, 236 and 224.

Through the first 4 weeks, there have been just 10 series rolled by subs. This week, Lucas Hersrud and Elias O’Hollaren became just the 4th and 5th subs used this season. Hersrud hit 794, while O’Hollaren hit 740.

A whopping 17 of the 56 bowlers had 500 or more at the turn this week, with a dozen of those totaling over 525. Joe Roseman’s 558 (258-300) was the best of those. Eight bowlers had 500 or more for their final 2 games, of which Josh Cantrill’s 565 (289-276) was the best.

Nearly a quarter of the games rolled this week (40 of 168) were over 250.

Lanes 23&24 have always had a feast-or-famine reputation. This week, it was a bountiful feast, as the 8 bowlers averaged 698. On this pair, Josh Cantrill emerged from an early season slump by hitting 793.

Sub Elias O’Hollaren subbed 5 times last season. In 2 of those appearances, he posted a 299 game. This week, he bettered that, opening with 300.

It only took 5 weeks, but Joe Roseman is back atop the average list. His 816 propelled him to a 247 mark, which is best after 15 games. Roseman has already captured 13 individual average titles in his career.

After bowling just 1 week, Hunter Lawrence has quit the league; he’s been replaced by Jacob Miner. While Miner struggled this week, better scores are ahead, I’m sure. Welcome back Jacob!

Condolences to Brian Andresen, whos’ father passed away recently. You are in the thoughts of so many of your friends in the bowling community, Brian.

Noah Kidwell, one of our talented rookies, cranked out games of 279, 235 and 269 for a sharp 783 that led the league this week. Kidwell is one of seven 2-handers in the league this season, and his strike ball is a big one. Kidwell’s 783 is the highest series by a regular so far in the 2026-27 campaign (trailing on sub Evan White’s opening night 814). The big blast enabled Kidwell to surge to the top of the average heap after 9 games; he’s scoring at a 244.22 clip. Jeff Rausch, Harry Hatayama III and Kendric Siders are close behind.

Josh Cantrill stormed back from an opening 194 to hit 299 in his second stanza, and that grabbed high individual game honors for the session.

Three new sponsors swept off with both team highs this week, as Pound and Inch Fabric wove the highest team series of the young season, fashioning a 2915, while Siam Thai Café and Russo Outdoor Power deadlocked for high game honors, each recording a 1007 in their opener.

There were a total of 19 700’s this time around, with another 42 600’s. Just 3 were stopped short of 600. The result was a 677.01 scoring average.

3 squads – Leisure Lanes, Idle Hour Lanes and McClellan Stockade posted all 12 of their games over 200.

There were only 2 head-to-head matches in which both bowlers hit 700 this week. They were Derek Elam (748) vs Jeff Rausch (731) and Kendric Siders (747) vs Tyler Close (716).

Pound and Inch Fabric is an eclectic mix of personnel, but they are clicking so far this season. I think their big 2915 this week is proof of that.

Individual match play began in 1973, with this being our 54th season of that format. This week, Noah Kidwell became the 305th different bowler to lead the league at least once over that span.

Just 5 bowlers had 500 or more at the turn this week, led by Derrick Lewandowski’s 534 (268-266). Only 3 players recorded 500 or higher for their final 2 games; Josh Cantrill was the best of those with 511 (299-212).

After missing our first 2 weeks, Hunter Lawrence made his first appearance of the season. The rookie hit 615; he’s a member on the M & L Properties team. In Lawrence’s only other prior appearance in the league – he hit 610 back on October 3, 2024.

I mentioned earlier that there are seven 2-handers in the league this season. They are Kidwell, Carter Mohr, Kevin Magnuson, Tyler Close, Derrick Lewandowski, Charlie Pelham, and Brock Larson. All 7 are 20-somethings, with Larson (26) being the oldest of this group.

The first 2 weeks saw just 3 subs, and this week, Bobby Lienen was the only sub in action.

Trophy King and Siam Thai Café – at opposite ends of the league this week – each won 21½ points this week.

Only 1 bowler has hit 700 in all 3 sessions so far – Jeff Rausch. That explains why he’s toward the top of the averages.

20-year-old sub Evan White’s 814 was high on opening night, and this week Kidwell, 21, was our league leader. Sandwiched in between this youth movement was 74-year-old Marc Lineberry, who led the league a week ago.

Marc Lineberry turned back the clock this week. The 74-year-old right-hander stroked games of 266, 266 and 243 for a sparkling 775 that led the league in scoring. This series was a thing of beauty, but an untimely final frame open quelled his chance for an 800 – something he’s never had in the Tri-City Classic.

At 74, Lineberry had a chance to become the oldest bowler to ever reach 800 in the Tri-City Classic. That standard still belongs to Bob Neff, who rolled 825 at age 73 on April 22, 2004. 8 different bowlers over the age of 60 have reached 800 in our league, but Neff is the only player past the age of 70 to do it.

This was the 11th time Lineberry has led the league in scoring – but his first in nearly 11 years. The most recent came on December 10, 2015 when he hit 795. Lineberry has spread those 11 occasions out over a span of nearly 50 years. His first time leading the league in scoring came on March 31, 1977 – 49½ years ago. And of those 11 times, only 4 have come since 1980.

High individual game honors went to Michaela Kelly and Kendric Siders, as they opened their night with perfect games. For each, this was their 4th Tri-City Classic perfecto.

McClellan Stockade swept both team highs for the evening, rolling a huge 1101 opener on their way to a 2896. They had an unbelievable start to their night, striking on 28 of their first 29 deliveries. Heading into the 10th frame, they had a shot to reach 1159, before closing at 1101. That became the 8th 1100 in the 13 seasons of our league’s draft format. The record is an 1129 rolled by Twisterz Pro Shop back on April 23, 2015.

There were 19 700’s, 44 600’s and just a single player under 600 – and that was Brandon Skahill’s 599. The average score was 674.76 – 6 pins less than opening night. There have been just 3 scores under 600 over the first 2 weeks of the 2026-27 campaign.

Pound and Inch Fabric was the winningest team this week; they stopped Cantrill Hardwood Floors 22-2. A week ago, Pound and Inch came away with just 3 points.

M & L Properties lost all 3 team games this week, but they won 7½ of their 12 individual points.

There were 4 matches in which both competitors topped 700. They were Matt Schlueter (756) vs Jake Stansbury (715), Logan Williams (750) vs Jack Urban (715), Harry Hatayama III (739) vs Mike Peters (718) and Lorn Crawford (734) vs Carter Mohr (700).

9 bowlers had 500 or more at the turn, led by Logan Williams’ 536 (247-289), while 5 players had 500 or more for their final 2 games; Tanner Peeler led that quintet with 513 (287-226).

A half dozen players have hit 700 each of the past 2 weeks – Harry Hatayama III, Logan Williams, Jayson Miner, Brian Price, Jeff Rausch and Lorn Crawford.

For the 2nd week in a row, there were just 3 subs – but they were the same 3 subs from opening night – Bobby Lienen, Evan White and Brek Strobel.

There was a trio of topsy-turvy individual series this week. Michaela Kelly hit 300-173-224 for 697, Seth Sander shot 232-180-279 for 691, and Lorn Crawford finished with 289-189-256 for 714.

Ben Slicklen converted the 7-10 split this week – and he didn’t bounce it out of the pit. I didn’t see it, but I heard he slid the 10 pin all the across as it cleared out the 7-pin. VERY unusual.

Tanner Peeler threw a LOT of strikes this week. The southpaw had to – to make up for his 5 missed single pins. Better spare days are ahead, Tanner.

Brian Brenner – Mike Brenner’s older brother – has been on hand the past 2 weeks. Brian rolled 1 complete season in our league, with that coming 46 years ago – in the 1982-83 season. Over the past 46 years, he’s lived in Arizona and Texas but has relocated back to the Quad-Cities. After 9 years away from the sport, he’s started bowling again, and he would be open to subbing in the league if called upon.

A week ago, Mike Peters rolled 617. That put him ahead of just 3 players on the average list. This week, he asked me when the last time he was that far down on the average sheet. Well, I can’t answer that question, but I can say is that the 57-year-old – now in his 34th season in the league – has maintained a standard of excellence throughout his career. He is a 4-time individual average champion who owns 25 top 10 average appearances; that’s just 1 away from matching Gary Garnaas’ league record of 26. Equally impressive – he’s never finished outside the top 20 averages, with his lowest finish being 17th (that coming in the 2023-24 campaign).

TRI-CITY CLASSIC OPENS LEISURE LANES 50TH SEASON

We’re off and running. The Tri-City Classic kicked off campaign #127 on Thursday, August 20th. It was a special evening, as the league helped host center Leisure Lanes begin their 50th season of operations, with the Tri-City Classic being there for all 50 of those.

It was back on September 15, 1977 that the Tri-City Classic first competed at Leisure Lanes, a newly built 24-lane center in Northwest Davenport. And this season, we celebrate the opening of season #127, while Leisure Lanes begins their celebratory 50th season of operation.

In an opening ceremony prior to competition, several dignitaries were introduced. Original owner Loretta Harmon Martinson, who – along with her late husband Henderson “Hindu” Harmon built Leisure Lanes in 1977, was on hand. They sold the bowling center in 1980 to Don & Arlene Warner, who were owners from 1980-1997. (Warner was unable to attend.) Brett Baldwin, who owned Leisure from 1997-2013 was on hand, as was current owner Rob Roseman Jr. Also on hand was Mick Spies; he helped pour the very concrete for Leisure’s foundation, and who is working at Leisure for his 50th season.

Former league members Don Johnson and Gary Garnaas were also present. Johnson fired the first 300 at Leisure Lanes, with that coming on December 21, 1978; that was the first 300 in our league since closing night of the 1957-58 season. Garnaas stroked a 279 triplicate on December 13, 1979, and that was the first 800 at Leisure Lanes, as well as Quad-City history. It also tied the American Bowling Congress all-time record for highest triplicate score. Ironically, Garnaas’ opponent on December 13, 1979 was Leisure Lanes owner Henderson “Hindu” Harmon, who shot 537 – exactly 300 pins less than Garnaas.

In our league’s first half-century, the league competed at different bowling centers each week, as most centers back then were not large enough to host our league. In 1951 – for the first time – all teams bowled at the same center, and that’s the way it has gone for the past 76 seasons – with the past 50 at Leisure Lanes. The Tri-City Classic has been proud to call Leisure home since 1977!

HIGHEST SCORING OPENING NIGHT EVER

This week’s 64 members and subs combined their talents to average 680.51. This established a new record for highest opening night average, eclipsing the previous record of 67.28 (set on August 22, 2024). 22 players topped 700, while just 2 bowlers were under 600. Only 4 players failed to break 625. Last season, just 5 nights during the season were higher than this season’s opening night scoring pace.

Sub Evan White was the opening night scoring leader. The 2-hander from Western Iowa had games of 278, 290 and 246 for his 814 gem. Over the past 3 seasons, this was White’s 5th time subbing, but it was his first time leading the league in scoring.

There have now been 435 800’s in Tri-City Classic history, with White becoming the 130th different bowler to roll an 800 in Tri-City Classic competition.

Rick Barlett earned high game honors by firing an improbable 300. The league veteran – bowling on a broken ankle – strung 12 strikes in his nightcap, which became the 884th perfect game in league annals. Barlett himself, has cranked out 16 of those.

At the team level, M & L Properties’ 2903 was the top team series, while Rose Bowl had 1065 for high team game honors. Rose Bowl looked like they were on their way to a new scoring record, firing games of 1037 and 1065. Unfortunately, their score came crashing down almost as fast as the Hindenburg, closing with 781. (By the way, our 4-player team scoring record under the draft format is 3057.)

There were only 3 subs in the lineup this week. Besides Evan White, former member Bobby Lienen returned with 691, while Brek Strobel hit 657. This was Strobel’s first-ever appearance in the league. For those keeping track, these 3 subs were filling in for Brian Andresen, Ben Slicklen and Hunter Lawrence.

There were 3 individual matches in which both competitors hit 700. They were Harry Hatayama III (772) vs Derrick Lewandowski (731), Lorn Crawford (720) vs Jaxon Robinson (703) and Duane Fleming (733) vs Jeff Rausch (700).

5 bowlers had more than 500 for their first 2 games led by Evan White’s 568 (278-290), while 4 players had 500 or more for their final 2 games. Brian Price’s 553 (287-266) led that quartet.

We welcome 10 rookies for the upcoming season, and 3 former members returning to our league. The 10 rookies include Kevin Magnuson, Kendric Siders, Tyler Close, Charlie Pelham, Jaxon Robinson, Noah Kidwell, Ty McCumsey, Hunter Lawrence, John Scott III and Whittney Morse. The trio of returners are Ben Slicklen, Billy Newman and Tanner Peeler. Magnuson (716) and Robinson (703) were the only rookies to surpass 700.

Over the past 55 seasons, there have now been 10 800’s fired on opening night. A quartet of players have led the league in scoring 4 times on opening night in their careers; they are Bob Cosper, Joel Carter, Dave Shackleford and Joe Roseman.

It was nice to see former 2-time individual average champ Dave Shackleford on hand as an observer this week. “Shack” was one of the premier power players in the league in the 1980’s and 90’s, racking up average titles in 1991-92 and again in 1996-97. He also finished runner-up on 4 occasions, and in all, earned 13 top 10 average appearances in his 18 seasons as a member.

MOMENT OF SILENCE OBSERVED IN HONOR OF WALLY LADEWIG

Wally Ladewig, a longtime Tri-City Classic League member, passed away at age 79 on August 4th. A moment of silence was observed to remember our departed friend. Ladewig enjoyed 28 seasons as a league member, and he also served as president of our league for 7 seasons. RIP Wally!

Exactly 45 years ago (August 20, 1981), legendary Tri-City Classic member Carl “C.B.” Schmidt passed away at the age of 92. In the vast history of our league, the right-hander was a monumental figure, leaving behind a legacy of success and friendship. Schmidt first subbed in our league in 1910, and his final season was the 1949-50 campaign. During his tenure, he was our individual average champion in 1937-38, and he was runner-up twice (in 1936-37 and 1938-39). In his lifetime, Schmidt was a prominent figure in the Quad-City corporate world as well, serving as president of the Crescent Macaroni Company for 20 years before retiring in 1957.

It was also on this date (August 20), in 1998, that Greg Jump opened the 1998-99 season by tossing games of 299, 278 and 268 for a huge 845 series, which became the highest series ever bowled in the Tri-City Classic. There have since been 20 individual series higher than 845 rolled in our league.

CAL WHITMORE TRI-CITY CLASSIC BEGINS SEASON #127

The Cal Whitmore Tri-City Classic League opens season #127 this Thursday, August 20th. As America’s oldest league rolls on, champions will be crowned, records will be broken, and new stars will emerge on the local stage.

The 2026-27 campaign will be a noteworthy one – as we celebrate our 50th season at Leisure Lanes. A special celebration will be held immediately prior to bowling, honoring Leisure Lanes’ historic 50th season of operation – with the Tri-City Classic having competed there for all 50 of those seasons.

Over the past 126 years, every top competitor from the Quad Cities and surrounding communities have competed in the league. Lasting legacies are built, as bowlers compete for bragging rights, while new friendships are established as well.

Opening night has provided some fireworks in the past. On opening night of the 1997-98 season (August 28), Joel Carter popped off an 837 series, which tied Gary Garnaas’ all-time league record established on December 13, 1979. Just a year later – on August 20, 1998 (exactly 28 years ago), Greg Jump stroked a huge 845 which rewrote the record book, establishing a new league record for highest individual series.

In our leagues’ history, there have been 9 800’s bowled on opening night. The highest came on August 21, 2014. On that night, Mike Peters had his big strike ball working as he carved out an 868, which came up just a pin short of Wes Bowman’s 869 record series. Who will be the star of this season’s opening night?

For the 3rd consecutive season, the league will see 16 teams of 4 players competing each week. A whopping 10 rookies were chosen at this summer’s league draft (Kevin Magnuson, Kendric Siders, Tyler Close, Charlie Pelham, Jaxon Robinson, Noah Kidwell, Ty McCumsey, Hunter Lawrence, John Scott III and Whittney Morse), while 3 former members return to action (Billy Newman, Mike Pelham and Ben Slicklen).

At 74, Marc Lineberry will be the league’s elder statesman in 2026-27. The right-hander rolled his first season in the league in 1972-73. Joel Carter and Chuck Schuette each begin their 48th season in the league.
