Proud of you Northwest!

IOWA’S SECRET WEAPON? FRIENDSHIP.

At the Little League World Series, everybody is looking for an edge.

The best pitcher.
The biggest bats.
The deepest lineup.

But Iowa may have something even more valuable.

They have each other.

I’ve talked about the Williamsport Lull — that point after you’ve been here awhile when the excitement settles down a little bit.

Suddenly you start thinking about home.

Your own bed.

Your dog.

Your family.

The normal little things you never thought you’d miss.

The homesickness bug starts pulling at you.

But friendship might be the antidote.

Remember when you were a kid and you went over to your friend’s house?

Maybe three or four of your buddies were there. You were laughing, talking, playing games, eating whatever somebody’s mother brought into the room.

There were no cell phones back then.

Then somebody looked at the clock.

1:00 A.M.

And somehow you couldn’t believe it.

You’d been there for hours, but you still didn’t want to go home.

Because for a kid, sometimes being surrounded by your friends was home.

They were your age.

They understood you.

You didn’t have to explain anything.

You were just happy being together.

That’s what I see when I watch this Iowa team.

Look at this picture.

Nobody appears to be counting the days until they leave Williamsport.

They’re still hanging on one another.

Still laughing.

Still enjoying the ride together.

And maybe that matters more now than it did on Day One.

Because when the Williamsport Lull comes calling and home starts tugging at you, Iowa has an answer.

It’s 1:00 A.M. at your best friend’s house…

and these kids still don’t want to go home.

In fact given the chance they’d stay there forever
