Old Ghost Custom Calls

I recently got back into the shop and decided to finally crank out a new design I've been tossing around in my head. This one is a push/pull call. You blow for a grunt and pull for a bleat, erasing the need to manipulate the reed in the field for different sounds. Oil finished, the barrels are Caribbean rosewood and band is maple burl.

Not everything that comes out of my shop is a call. I turned out a few padauk shot glasses to give out as gifts this year for Christmas and had just as much fun doing them as I do when I turn out a call. I hope all of you have had a wonderful holiday season.

This grunt call is made from something special.

The wood is from a stack of cedar logs my late PawPaw set up behind his shop for sighting in rifles. If you ever shot a gun at his shop, you fired it into those logs. They've been there for over 40 years. They're almost rotten by now, so I wanted to get some of it and salvage what I could.

I like to believe that we take things with us through life that somehow connect us to passed loved ones and memories we hold dear. In this way, they are always with us to bear witness to our wins and losses; and, hopefully one day we can pass these items along to our children so they too can carry on our own traditions of sentiment.

I love doing this and I hope it shows through in the final product.
