Today we bid farewell to Sensei Joe Campisi a life long advocate of Renshinkan karate here in the U.S. May he rest in peace.
Attached is a eulogy from one of his inspired students, please remember Sensei Campisi in your thoughts and prayers:
Hello, my name is Bill Boivin and Joseph Campisi changed my life. Mr. Campisi was my sensei-he taught me karate but more importantly he taught me karate-do. "Do" is a Japanese term meaning the way of a martial artist. He emphasized the principles of courtesy, respect, and discipline in every class. He was the strongest person I had ever met-not just physically but internal strength, strength of spirit that I had never seen before. He took me, a 17 year old wimpy math and science geek and turned me into a man. He showed me that I could do things I would never have thought possible.
His karate classes were the most difficult things I have ever experienced. Example one of a thousand I could give you-I remember one hot summer night at our un airconditioned dojo, he walked in and the room went dead silent. Without saying a word he walked to each open window and slowly closed it. Then walked over and pointing said, "we are not leaving this room tonight until I cannot see myself in this mirror". And we worked until the floor was soaking wet with our sweat and the mirror was fogged over. There were no water breaks or rest periods. We worked until our bodies gave up. Then our minds kept us going. Then we worked until our mind gave up. That's when the only thing that keeps you going is your inner spirit. You find out who you really are. Sensei Campisi showed me that I have an inner strength I did not know was in there.
I was blessed with a brain and a good education. I have a physics degree from Tufts University and a Masters Degree in Medical Physics from Harvard University. I was taught by some of the brightest people in the world-I was mentored by a Nobel prize winner. But the most important lessons I ever received were from Sensei Joseph Campisi. He taught me inner strength, self-confidence, and leadership. For that I am forever grateful.
Thank you Joseph Campisi; domo arigato gozsimasu, Sensei.
