Doheny State Beach Foundation (DSBF) is the non-profit cooperating association of Doheny State Beach, dedicated to the protection of the park’s beaches, facilities, marine refuge and its historical, cultural and social stories. These challenges are met through DSBF's fundraising efforts and active support of the park’s educational, interpretive, conservation and restoration programs. DSBF was esta
blished in 1982, making it one of the oldest cooperating associations in the California State Parks System. CURRENT PROJECTS
VC
THE VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTER: DSBIA teamed with California State Parks in renovating and upgrading the Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) following great damages to the building in 2007. Today, the VIC contains the largest public aquarium in the California State Park System with a tide pool tank and 5 other aquarium tanks containing local critters from the various ocean habitats around Doheny, displays of bird and mammals, a park gift store, and ranger offices. The VIC is open to the public most days between 10 AM and 4 PM and is staffed with DSBIA volunteer docents. Free programs for schools and other groups are available upon request. First Whale at Whale Walk RETURN OF THE WHALE WALK: Once upon a time, life-sized paintings of the whales found off our coastline graced the beach front walkway of the park. Time and walkway repairs took their toll on our cetaceans and they faded away. DSBF is bringing back the Whale Walk! We’ve already painted a Humpback, a Gray and an Orca. We have plans to expand the Doheny Whale Walk this year with seven more whales and dolphins! You’ll soon see a blue whale, finback and minke. DSF
DOHENY SURF FESTIVAL: The annual Doheny Surf Festival celebrating the Southern California surfing lifestyle has become a primary fundraising event for DSBF. A partnership event with DSBF, California State Parks, and the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. The two-day festival held in late June is filled with surfing demonstrations, music, movies, vendors and amazing food, and is FREE to the public. CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE PARK’S MANY ENVIRONMENTAL AND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS: DSBF provides financial support for the Park’s Junior Ranger Summer program open to park visitors and the local community. DSBF members assist the Park’s summer campfire program with members offering evening presentations. DSBF supports the park’s four annual beach clean-ups. DSBF supports restoration and replanting of native plants and trees in the park. WHAT’S IN THE FUTURE? With the Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) now open, DSBF is assisting the Doheny Park staff in developing, training and coordinating a docent program to support integrated, curriculum-based programs for park visitors, schools and other groups. We have a goal of establishing transportation grants to assist schools in bringing students to the park and VIC for field trip experiences. DSBF will begin establishing competitive scholarships for school student volunteers who donate their time to the VIC and the park. JOIN US!
