Exiting fb:

Recent events have caused me to pause and take stock of what value, if any, the curse fb brings to any of us. We post pro-this or anti-that, looking for “Likes” that somehow validate our existence. They don’t. They only reinforce what we already believe, or cause lost relationships with friends and acquaintances if they don’t. It’s a self-doctrination, further boxing us in a mirror-walled prison (like those that sit and watch only Fox or only MSNBC as their so-called news source).

I will miss scrolling through the tailored news feeds, clips that primarily consist of sailboats, lions eating al manner of other animals, scantly-clad women pole dancing, and foodie stuff (why is that, I wonder). But it will offer more time for hopefuly more positive, real life experiences.

Don’t bother replying to this post, as it will go unread, wasted in the boneyard of deleted fb profiles.

Veteran’s Appreciation Sail
(Marine Corps League Southcoast Detachment Event)

Enjoyed a fabulous day on Earth’s blue heart, sailing on Cabernet Sky with USMC active duty and retired veterans and their significant others. Whales and dolphins were allusive, but sun, wind, great food, drink and fine company were abound.

A little yard work on the hillside early, then a dip in the hot tub on a perfect day in Dana Point. Enjoyed a parade of Painted Lady butterflies that swarmed by, a few stopping to smell the flowers along the way. A lesson there somewhere ...

Fun day racing on Randy Hawkins’ Pacifico in the 3/14 (Pi day) Farkle Race, with mighty Ken Silver at the helm. We where cheered on by two whales at the start of the race. Celebrated finishing the race (and no loss of body parts or full persons in the process) with a cold beer, followed by more lies than truths about our performance back at the Dana Point Yacht Club bar.

Another great day to be on the water.

There She Blows!

Here’s an extract from that fateful day, an entry that will be included in the in-work title (TBA pending copyright filing):

The Captain stood next to the helmsman as the ship plowed through the seas, lost in his thoughts, reflecting on the events that led them here. One of the voyagers approached and took a position next to the Captain. Looking West, the voyager said "Halfway to paradise, can't wait to get there and see the beauty and smell the air." The Captain glanced in that direction, then returned his gaze to the course that was set. Even if the events that were about to unfold were known to him, it wouldn't matter. He looked at the slate gray sea, with silver lined wave crests glistening in the moon light, the shapes of scattered clouds and twinkling stars woven into the fabric. The Captain thought to himself "Paradise? We're already there.”

Nautical Ventures provides Sailing Education and Certification as a certified Sailing School through NauticEd., Marine Services and Community Outreach.

Another day at the office ...

Skippered a boat for Aventura today. Didn’t know what to expect, which is part of the attraction: maybe a different boat, certainly different passengers, wind and weather, etc.

Sometimes it’s a very pleasant surprise, and today was one of those days. Took a group out made up of a couple of photographers and 4 models for a photo shoot (Italian swimwear company - yee haw!) on Lydie, an elect (that’s right, an e-boat!) Hunter 36. All were treated with a whale passing by about 20 yards off the beam. Surprises abound!

And such is life. You never know what lies just around the corner ...
