One of the things I’ve really appreciated while getting to know Ferguson is having Tatiana from Royal Hands Equine Services help me better understand how he uses his body and where he carries tension. With a newer horse, every piece of information helps build the bigger picture.

I always want the horses to feel supported as they settle into their work, and having trusted professionals around the horses makes that process so much better.

Nothing beats the balance of a Voltaire Design USA & Canada saddle... except maybe the moral support of my favorite jump judge, Bear.

And if you think I’m kidding, I’m not.

Find us a hobby horse competition, and we’re in.

I truly cannot stop talking about my Red Barn reins from KL Select — but after riding through rain at the Virginia Horse Center, I feel even more justified in it. No slipping, no second guessing, no fighting to keep a feel of the contact while the weather tried to blow us across the arena.

You’ll often see cross-country flags set up in the arena here, especially when we’re working with young horses.

It helps them start thinking about jumping through the question instead of just over a fence. Small details like this build understanding early, so when they see it out on course later… it already feels familiar.

It was a busy weekend for the at Virginia Horse Center Foundation Eventing — and I think all of us are still drying out after riding through sideways rain most of the weekend.

Adara and I finished 4th in the Open Novice, and I was really proud of how she handled the conditions. HH Like No Otter also came along for the weekend and handled his first overnight big show experience like a total professional. He slid into the ditch (he’s barefoot) so will let slide (literally). He is currently still napping as apparently being five years old is exhausting work.

Kyra and Excel Star Wildwood had a great weekend as well, finishing 2nd in the Senior Beginner Novice. This is still a relatively new partnership, and it’s been exciting watching them learn each other and grow more confident together every outing. Josephine Gomon and her own Looks Don’t Lie also added to the weekend success with a 6th place finish in the Beginner Novice Horse division.

And the excitement didn’t stop when the horse show ended — we got home just in time to welcome my newest ride, Ferguson (sourced by Pegazon.horsesPegazon.horses from Germany. I’m very excited to start getting to know this talented horse and introduce him to the sport of eventing.

Young horses usually jump better when you let them go forward and solve the question in front of them.

In this lesson, we introduced a new “spooky” jump and let him figure it out with a bit of confidence and momentum. He handled it beautifully.

Sometimes, the best help you can give them is simply letting them land and go somewhere.

Spring always seems to bring a little extra along with it—longer days, more turnout… and the inevitable leg scurf that comes with it.

Staying ahead of it really comes down to consistency. Regular bathing helps keep their skin clean and comfortable, especially as it gets warmer. I like using Dapple Up because it’s made with naturally derived, essential oil–based ingredients, so it’s effective without being harsh on the horses’ skin.

A good warmup is never wasted.

We spend a lot of time in the beginning of lessons working on transitions within the gait — helping horses become more adjustable, more balanced, and more attentive to their riders.

The jumping always gets the attention, but the real work happens long before the first fence.

(And Bear is always nearby making sure everyone is doing it correctly.)
