One of my favorite questions to answer is “…soo what’s up with the potato?”
Spuds Adventure Gear started as an idea on my SOBO thru hike of the Appalacahin Trail in 2021.
After dropping one too many Clif bars in the dirt while holding my trekking poles, I wondered how I could solve this problem. Surely there has to be an easier way to carry my poles while snacking on the go. About 500 miles farther down trail, with a brain fueled exclusively off of cold-soaked instant mashed potatoes, the solution hit me… or maybe that was just my hiking poles.
After completing my thru-hike, I built the first of many prototypes, consisting of scotch tape, rubber bands and a refrigerator magnet. I spent months testing, breaking, and improving on the design. Like my thru hike it proved to be a slow but steady march towards progress. Now, Spuds Adventure Gear is mass producing Stick Stashers: a quick connect magnetic clip to attach your poles to your backpack. Each set is hand assembled in our garage with the help of my mom, who we’ve nicknamed “Rosie the Riveter.”
Running such a small operation, I get to wear many hats ranging from engineer, accountant, salesperson, to even logistics ‘enthusiast’ (to call myself a guru in this area would be a bit generous). But, by far my favorite role is engaging with customers. Through Spuds Adventure Gear I stay connected with the hiking community. Each email exchange takes me back to my time on trail, discussing gear and the simplicity of trail life, like a shelter conversation just before hiker midnight.
So, to answer your question; “What’s up with that potato?” Our logo was inspired by my trail name – Spud, after my undying love for those cold soaked, instant mashed potatoes. The name was bestowed upon me by my beloved tramily; a group that, to me, perfectly captures the adventurous and free-spirited essence of the outdoor community. It’s this amazing hiker camaraderie that makes small businesses like Spuds Adventure Gear possible.
In that same spirit, help us celebrate the hiking community by joining Garage Grown Gear’s 2023 Cottage Gear Give Away (link in Bio)- and hopefully win some cool prizes! Happy Hiking!
