The AKA Open is this Saturday. North Idaho College Christian Gymnasium, 1000 W Garden Ave, in Coeur d'Alene.

Come compete, or support our competitors as they suit up and take the mats as Team Iron Lion one last time in honor of Professor Derek Cleveland. We would like to sport as much Iron Lion gear as we can and try to get seats all together at the venue.

Arrive early and I’d like to have a quick competitors meeting before the event begins.

ATTENTION: For the upcoming funeral service on Saturday October 29th at 11am at Real Life ministries in Post Falls, it would be great for everyone in attendance to wear their Iron Lion Academy gear, Lions Den gear, Team Idaho Gear, or Iron Lion Tactical gear! Hoodies, t shirts, tank tops, rash guards or whatever you have that you’re comfortable wearing in honor of my dad. If you want to take it to the next level don’t forget to sport your designer jeans and flip flops!! This was my dads favorite look!

Students and families of Iron Lion Jiu Jitsu Academy,

On behalf of my dad who loved you all so much and had a passion for improving lives, we thank you. We thank you for being such an important part of my dads life and dedicating yourself even when he pushed you to uncomfortable levels. He had a way of impacting people and challenging them to discover the best version of themselves.

I know it’s been a difficult week full of unknowns and unreliable information as we navigate one of the most difficult situations I’ve experienced. All while trying to grieve and make final arrangements. I appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. I miss him every day. He equipped me much like he equipped all of you to be strong in the face of adversity and stand my ground against bullies. I have taken time this week to carefully consider his wishes, and how he would move forward in this kind of situation. Although some of you won’t agree with the final decisions, please understand not everything is as it looks all the time and there were many factors that have been carefully considered.

My dad was one of a kind. While so many have wonderful gifts that he gave through training, there will never be another Derek Cleveland. So I have decided to retire the Iron Lion Academy brand with his passing. I don’t feel it is something that can be repeated.

With that we had several offers to purchase the equipment and we accepted a fair offer from a third party jiu jitsu academy. This will help offset some of the costs associated with what’s next and to throw my dad the best send off to Heaven I can give him.

With that, Coach Josiah Paull will be running the homeschool kids class tomorrow morning at 10am and the kids class tomorrow night at 5:30pm. The doors will be locked for a final time after that.

Our youth program was so important to my dad. Coach Walther and the Paull family coaches gave graciously agreed to coach our Iron Lion kids as well as adults through one more tournament at the AKA Open on November 5th.

The Alpha Jiu Jitsu School in Post Falls who purchased the equipment has also agreed to allow competitors to come train for free through November 4th to prepare for the competition.

Finally, please know that the legacy Derek Cleveland left on this earth was not tied to a brand or a name or a location or even any one team. He has been a big part of every jiu jitsu student in this area directly or in directly. His legacy is in the jiu jitsu he gave all of you! His passion was to change lives positively through jiu jitsu. It was the Iron Lion mission. Go spread his jiu jitsu. Go change lives. He lives on through those positive actions and interactions you have on the mats. He would want you to be at peace, maintain a positive mindset, and go do good things with what he gave you in his short time.

Hey everyone. Just doing a team check in as we navigate through this difficult time. I hope everyone is hanging in there. Professor had a significant impact on all of our lives and played an important role for all of us. If anyone is struggling, needs to talk or has questions please don’t hesitate to ask me. We are all in this together and we’ll be fine. I’m confident in telling you all, regardless of the situation we are in Professor would want everyone to continue their jiu jitsu journey. He had a different way of teaching and training that made it higher level. We all have that in us. The best way to honor him is to continue training, make this a lifestyle and carry on the mission of positively changing lives through jiu jitsu. You all have his style. You all have his jiu jitsu. From the 4 year olds to the old guys like me. Create change with it! You all are the legacy of Professor Derek Cleveland. I deeply care about all of you and how you and your children are doing.
