As someone who sees the inside of thermal optics regularly, this doesn’t surprise me. Trijicon built these REAP-IRs like tanks. Stolen, dumped in a river, recovered two years later, and still hanging on. Impressive engineering and durability.

This REAP-IR® was stolen, dumped in a river, and fished out two years later caked in mud. Tested for the worst.

Another interesting one on the Tech Savvy Optics bench this week.

Customer brought in a PVS-7 that had a pretty strange issue, probably caused by a tired NV technician . After opening the housing up, we found the IR illuminator and bright light cutoff sensor had actually been installed in the wrong locations and sealed in with RTV.

On PVS-7 systems, the front housing contains:
• IR illuminator/emitter
• Bright light / highlight sensor
• Wiring harness and power distribution components

The IR emitter should occupy the outermost position above the power k**b, while the light sensor sits adjacent to it inside the housing.

Definitely not the first time we’ve seen “field engineered” night vision repairs come across the bench.

Always satisfying bringing legacy NV gear back to proper operating condition.
