GIRLS SWIMMER OF THE YEAR: Stauffer finishes freshman year on a high

Look at the Dallas girls swimming roster, and the first thing that strikes you is the amount of talented freshmen.

Ask Macie Stauffer about it, and she smiles. She’s one of those underclassmen who led the Mountaineers this season.

She credits her friends, Locklynn Bienkowski and Julia Gavlick, for pushing her every day at practice.
“Even if it was a hard practice, I still had those swimmers next to me that would push me through every practice. Even if I wasn’t feeling it that day, they would encourage me to keep pushing, and if they weren’t feeling it, I would encourage them. We were there for each other, just making each other better every day,” Stauffer said.

Those friendly competitions in practice, working through those difficult moments, paid ten-fold for Stauffer.

Helping to lead Dallas to a top-eight finish in the PIAA Class 2A swimming championships, she finished eighth in the 200 free, and swam the anchor leg on the 400 free relay squad that also placed eighth in the state.

For her efforts, she is The Citizens’ Voice Girls’ Swimmer of the Year.
At the District 2 meet, Stauffer finished with two golds, a silver and a bronze, winning the 200 free and was part of the 400 free relay.

Dallas ended second in the 200 medley relay, and Stauffer was third in the highly competitive 100 free that featured Scranton Prep’s Rebecca Oakes and Elk Lake’s Brynn Warriner.

For Stauffer, every day was a learning experience.
Every practice.
Every meet.
Even her first state meet at Bucknell.

Stauffer sat down with The Citizens’ Voice to talk about her freshman year, the impact her sister Peyton had on her, and what she plans to work on in the offseason.

Talk about your journey through swimming.

How did you get involved with the sport: I started to swim when I was seven with the Dallas Mountaineers Aquatic Club. I started because my sister swam, and I thought that it would be a lot of fun.

Your sister, Peyton, was a good swimmer at Dallas also, and had a strong career with the Mountaineers. How much did she motivate and inspire you: She has been one of the biggest role models for me, and one of the best swimmers that I know. She is one of my best friends. Whether I am having a good or bad practice, she is always there to lift me up. Even if I am having a bad meet, she can relate to what I am going through. She’s always been there for me.
Is it good to have a sister that’s been through what you are going through: It’s awesome. When it was my first high-level meet, I would ask her questions on how it was? I was so prepared for those meets. I wasn’t scared or nervous at all. I was just excited to get into the pool.

Any nerves heading into your freshman year: Not at all. For the most part, I was just really excited. I knew a lot of people, including my sister, who already went through the varsity program, and you can tell that they had such a blast. And I had a bunch of friends coming up with me as well. I wanted to just have some fun with my friends, and show my talent.

You have a lot of talented freshmen on the team this year. What’s that like: Locklynn (Bienkowski) and Julia (Gavlick), they are two of my closest friends. Not only are they awesome teammates and friends, they are great swimmers. They are fun to be around, and I am grateful that I got to share this experience with them.

Any moments or memories stick out for you this year: With my whole team, it was great. We did have a close-knit team, and we were all friends. Even with the boys’ team, we would go out for dinner after practice and we would always hang out. The breakfasts before districts was also fun. We were all close. It was nice.

What was the district meet like for you: It wasn’t my best meet, overall. My relays were really good, and I was pretty happy with those. In my 200 free, it wasn’t my best race. I went out a little too fast, but you learn from every experience.

What was your first PIAA state meet like: I had experienced high-level meets with DMAC, so I wasn’t nervous at all. For the most part, I was pretty excited because it’s a good experience with your high-school teammates. You get to spend time with them in the hotel, and hang out with them. Swimming is all about fun and the experience. I just had to show the glory to God for the gift that he gave me.

Were you happy with how the state meet went: I was extremely happy with how I swam there. I was able to PR in all of my races, and I made the finals in all of my races. I was able to medal in the 200 free. It was a lot of fun overall.

You swim the anchor leg in the relays. Is that a spot that you enjoy swimming: I love swimming the last leg, especially when it’s a close race. I love being able to stay ahead or either catching up. I am a racer. I love to catch up. There are no nerves there. It’s just fun for me.

Have you started to think about your sophomore year yet: I am going to focus on my underwaters and my turns, especially, this summer and heading into next season. That’s what has been the hardest part about my races. My turns are a little slow, and my underwaters need to be a little faster. Overall, I am excited. I will have a bunch of my friends from eighth grade coming up, too. I am excited to see what we can do next year.

The future of Dallas swimming looks pretty bright, doesn’t it: It’s going to be awesome. Two of my teammates from DMAC, Audrey Yeager and Maeve Watkins, will be here next year. They are both incredible swimmers. I am interested to see how well we can do in the relays, and as an overall team.

WVC swimming coaches announce All-Star teams, MVPs
Times Leader April 22, 2026

EDITOR’S NOTE: The WVC Coaches Swimming All-Stars will appear in print in this Sunday’s edition of the Times Leader.

Fresh off of big medal hauls at the District 2 Swimming Championships last month, Tunkhannock’s Jaden Baltrusaitis and Dallas’s Locklynn Bienkowski were named the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 2A MVPs as the conference all-star teams were released on Wednesday.

In Class 3A, the WVC coaches selected Wyoming Valley West’s Cole Bolesta and Hazleton Area’s Lia Ochs as MVPs, both swimmers winning gold at an otherwise Lackawanna Conference-dominated district championship meet at the Class 3A level.

Selections were made based on swimmers’ times from the District 2 championship meet. In both classes, two swimmers and one relay team were named to the WVC first team in each event while one swimmer and one relay were named honorable mention in each event.

Class 2A
The Tunkhannock boys and Dallas girls dominated the list of all-stars after the Tigers won a District 2 team title and the Mountaineers finished runner-up at the district championship meet.
Baltrusaitis was the leader of the pack for the Tigers, earning first-team nods in the 50 Free and 100 Free on his own and the 200 and 400 Free relays with his Tunkhannock teammates. Baltrusaitis won District 2 gold in all four events, the most decorated WVC athlete at the championships.
Tunkhannock’s 200 Free relay didn’t just win a district title, and didn’t just set a district record in the process; the Tigers went on to win the state championship in the event as well.
Fellow Tiger Kyle Kozloski joined Baltrusaitis on the 50 and 100 Free first teams and the 200 and 400 Free relay first teams; Kozloski finished runner-up to Baltrusaitis in the two individual events at districts but was the WVC’s single-best individual finisher at states with a silver medal in the 100 Free.
In total, the Tigers had eight different boys’ swimmers named to the first-team. Dallas had five first-teamers and Lake-Lehman had four, including Connor Runquist, the only District 2 boys gold medalist not from Tunkhannock with his win in the 500 Free.
On the girls’ side, Bienkowski was named MVP as a freshman after winning three gold medals at districts: she won the 500 Free, the 200 IM and helped steer Dallas to a win in the 400 Free Relay.
A first-team nod in the 200 Medley Relay made it four total for Bienkowski this year. Her Dallas teammates Maria-Lucia Priore and Macie Stauffer also had four first-team nods each.
Outside of the Mountaineers, Lake-Lehman’s Carlee Monko was named first team in the 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay and 100 Breaststroke to lead the Black Knights.
Wyoming Seminary’s Rachel Ryu was named first team in the 50 and 200 Free. Wyoming Area had two first teamers, Ameriana Walker in the 100 Free and Bree Harry in the 100 Back, and Holy Redeemer’s Olivia Davis was the lone Royals swimmer on the list in the 50 Free.

Class 3A
Bolesta, a district champ in the 200 Free and 200 Free relay, had four total first-team recognitions on the Class 3A Boys list. He was also listed for the 500 Free and the 400 Free relay.
Valley West and Hazleton Area made up the entirety of the first team selections in Class 3A after strong showings at the district championship meet, which was won by Abington Heights.
Morris Hunsinger and Nicholas Pop each made the first team three times to lead Hazleton Area.
Ricardo Albuquerque matched Bolesta with four first-team nods for Wyoming Valley West. David Nelson and William Bell had three first-team selections each for the Spartans.
The WVC Class 3A girls team featured more variety, with Ochs winning MVP after capturing two gold medals at the district championship meet in the 200 Medley relay and the 200 Free. She was also named to the first team in the 500 Free and 400 Free relay.
Kaitlyn Keown earned three first-team nods for Tunkhannock in the 200 IM, the 100 Back and the 200 Free Relay. The Tunkhannock freshman won district golds in the two individual events.
She was joined in first-team status from Tunkhannock by Madelyn Graves, who made it in the 50 Free, the 100 Free and alongside Keown in the 200 Free relay. Sophia Sobeck was named first team in the Diving event for Tunkhannock.
Wyoming Valley West’s Keira Legaspi was named first team in the 200 IM and 500 Free, and Karissa Legaspi made the first team in the 100 Fly.
Pittston Area rounded out the first teamers with Kate O’Hearn in the Diving event.
