One of the amazing parts of our curriculum is learning groundwork . Our horsemanship students are learning all facets of training and breaking young horses including this very special quarter horse pony Mia .
Teaching groundwork to horses teaches our students essential horsemanship, safety, and life skills, including confidence, leadership, emotional regulation, and clear communication through body language. It builds a safe foundation for riding by establishing trust and respect, teaching children how to read equine behavior and move a horse’s body safely on the ground.
Key benefits for our students include:
Confidence & Leadership: Students learn that they can influence a large animal through body language rather than force, building self-confidence.
Safety & Boundaries: Groundwork teaches kids how to safely handle a horse, including leading, standing still, and respecting personal space, reducing the likelihood of being stepped on or pushed.
Understanding Body Language: Kids learn to read the horse’s mental state and cues (such as ear position or tension), which improves empathy and communication.
Emotional Control: Because horses react to human emotions, kids learn to remain calm, patient, and focused, as nervous energy often translates to a restless horse.
Bonding & Trust: Working on the ground establishes a partnership and mutual trust, making the horse more cooperative and reinforcing a deeper human-animal bond.
Responsibility & Prep Skills: Basic, essential skills like grooming, leading, and leading, and preparing a horse.
