🐴✨ TODAY AT BARRINGTON HILL ACADEMY:
Horsemanship 2 & IEA Class Spotlight! ✨🐴
What a day of growth, grit, and incredible horsemanship!
Our riders stepped into the arena today to tackle some serious technical skills, balancing the art of equitation with essential horse care and anatomy. Here’s a look inside today’s session! 👇🎨 MASTERING THE GAITS & BILATERAL MOVEMENTS
Our Horsemanship 2 students began by breaking down horse gaits, focusing on rhythm and tempo. They took it up a notch by diving into bilateral movements—ensuring our equine partners are supple, balanced, and worked evenly on both sides! Riders practiced "two-tracking," a foundational lateral movement where the horse moves forward and sideways simultaneously on two distinct paths. This is where true communication between rider and horse shines!
🏆 NAVIGATING THE IEA & EQUITATION DIVISIONS
For our Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) team, today was all about precision. Unlike traditional showing, IEA tests a rider’s pure equitation—meaning they are judged entirely on their posture, alignment, effectiveness, and seat. We reviewed how equitation divisions work, focusing on how riders must adapt instantly to an unfamiliar horse drawn by random lottery on show day. Total adaptability is the name of the game!
🛡️ PROTECTIVE GEAR CLINIC: SPLINT BOOTS & LEG ANATOMY
Horsemanship doesn’t stop when you dismount! Today’s hands-on stable management lesson focused on leg protection. We explored the anatomy of the horse's lower leg, focusing on the critical tendons and ligaments—like the suspensory ligament—that absorb high concussion during work.Students learned about different kinds of splint boots (neoprene, leather, and hardshell) designed to protect the delicate splint bone from accidental strikes.Wrapping up the day, everyone practiced how to correctly put boots on a horse:
1️⃣ Position the boot slightly high on the cannon bone and slide it downward so it seats comfortably over the fetlock, smoothing the hair flat.
2️⃣ Always pull the straps from front to back (velcro closing toward the horse's tail) to ensure pressure is pulling against the bone, never pinching the delicate tendons at the back of the leg.
3️⃣ Fasten firmly with even tension—not too loose to slip, but not too tight to restrict circulation! We are so proud of how hard our riders worked today, building real-world life skills, confidence, and ultimate respect for our four-legged athletes!

Gardening class was busy today!

This continues to be one of our most requested classes at Barrington Hill Academy. What started with one instructor has now grown to three, and sometimes even four, helping guide all of our young gardeners.

We started class with a brief worksheet covering garden safety and some basic gardening knowledge, then got right to work.

The students had a lively discussion brainstorming what they would like to grow in our garden this semester, and together we narrowed it down to 16 different things! We can’t wait to see what this group is able to grow.

Then it was time for our first trip out to the garden this semester. We went looking to see what goodies had been left behind thanks to all the hard work of our summer students.

The kids were able to harvest cucumbers to take home, and we talked about how to tell when different fruits and vegetables are ready to be harvested and why timing matters.

But the highlight of the day was definitely harvesting a GIANT pumpkin grown by some of the best students around!

Everyone had a chance to pass it around and see just how heavy it was, and oh boy, was it heavy! Once we finished admiring their summer masterpiece, the pumpkin was handed off to become a very special snack for the animals here at Barrington Hill.

One of our favorite things about classes like gardening is watching just how involved the students become when they are genuinely interested in what they are learning. The questions, conversations, ideas, and excitement were nonstop today.

We have a feeling this garden is going to be something pretty special this semester.

Follow along this semester as we watch their ideas take root, grow, and become reality right here in the Barrington Hill garden!

P.S. These kids dream BIG, and our compost pile is not going to keep up! We’re going to need what feels like a semi load of soil to bring all 16 of their garden ideas to life. If anyone would like to donate soil or help us source some, Barrington Hill Equine Foundation is a 501(c)(3), and we would be incredibly grateful for the support.

Today marks the FIRST DAY of a brand-new school year at Barrington Hill Academy! 💙
The barn is full of excitement, familiar faces, new friendships, big goals, and plenty of opportunities to learn, grow, and get a little muddy along the way! 🌱🐎
At Barrington Hill, we believe education should be about more than what happens inside a classroom. Our students learn through hands-on experiences, animals, agriculture, horsemanship, creativity, life skills, teamwork, leadership, and real-world challenges.
Every day is an opportunity to build confidence, character, responsibility, and independence—while creating memories that will last far beyond this school year.
To our returning students: WELCOME BACK! 💙
To our new students and families: WELCOME TO THE BARRINGTON HILL FAMILY! 🤍
Here’s to a wonderful semester filled with learning, laughter, hard work, new adventures, and growing together.
🌟 The 2026–2027 school year starts TODAY! 🌟
