The man responsible for killing six hunters and wounding two others during Wisconsin’s 2004 deer season is back in the news after recently passing away. Chai Vang, 57, died in a Wisconsin hospital while serving six consecutive life sentences for a confrontation in the deer woods that turned into one of the darkest hunting stories the country has ever seen.

During Wisconsin’s 2004 deer fi***rm season, Vang climbed into a tree stand on private hunting land. When members of the hunting party confronted him for trespassing, the encounter exploded into gunfire. What followed went far beyond a simple confrontation. People were shot while trying to get away, others were shot after coming to help their wounded friends, and four of the six people killed were shot in the back. One of the victims was 20-year-old Joey Crotteau, whom Vang admitted chasing through the woods before shooting him in the back from close range.

At trial, Vang claimed self-defense and said one of the hunters had fired at him first after racial slurs were exchanged. But his own testimony created major problems. Under cross-examination, Vang admitted several of the people he shot had never fired at him, never touched him and never physically attacked him. He was ultimately convicted of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted homicide after the jury deliberated for only a few hours.

Vang was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. More than two decades later, he died while still behind bars, closing the final chapter on a case Wisconsin deer hunters have never forgotten.
