The Broken Down Ranch

The Broken Down Ranch Our little ranch joins 40,000 acres of National Forest and overlooks the beautiful Kettle River Valley.

Our horses are raised to be gentle but rugged mountain horses. Our stallion is Cool Tankard, a registered solid Appaloosa who throws color.

How's everyone doing? Looking forward to a great summer of riding fun. I've been sick for over a year but I'm determined to get my butt back in the saddle. Just hope Thunder feels like hauling my butt.

It's not supposed to do this in south arkansas, is it?

A friend of mine has a couple of puppies that need a good home.

Living in South Arkansas now has created some challenges finding good quality horse hay. You can find grass hay by the bale and by the rounds. Unfortunately, alfalfa is rare and next to impossible to find but you can get good fertilized grass hay when combined with grain, will keep your horses happy and healthy. Prices and distance do vary though. I have found several places to get large rounds and one place to get really good square bales. If you are thinking about getting a horse, bare in mind not just the expense but also the availability of feed and supplies.
When we lived on the mountain in Washington, our horses were free to roam and forage. They were very health. I bought alfalfa in the winter for them and didn't need to grain.
I only have 3 horses as opposed to 18 and the struggle to feed them is still an issue. I often think about reducing down to just one, my Thunder.
Another thing to consider when getting your first horse is vets and farriers. How much do they charge in your area? Does the vet make farm calls? Thankfully my horses have not needed a vet and we have gotten pretty good at doctoring injuries but you never know.
Just some things to consider for those in the market for a new horse.

Life is good in Arkansas but sure do miss the mountains. It's a trade off, I guess
