A Customer brought me a WW II vintage 03 A3 Springfield rifle. He had a W.M. Malcom scope and he wanted it mounted. This scope is period correct for USMC sniper rifles serving in the Pacific Theater. Normally I am adamantly against modifying these old rifles due to the fact that they have been getting sporterized for so many decades that there aren't many left that haven't been Bubbaized.
Anyhow, this project was quite the challenge. These old receivers are harder than woodpecker lips. Cobalt bits wouldn't touch it, and several attempts at spot annealing it failed. A carbide drill bit was required and even after that, the tap was toast at the end of the job. The front base is drilled and tapped into the barrel which brings with it it's own set of problems. Don't drill deep enough, scope won't stay put. Drill too deep, you just ruined a barrel. Anyhow, I was pretty happy with the end result.
