Tuesday Tip | From the Bullpen with Mark Hanrahan: Don’t Cut Off Your Follow-Through
One of the most common issues I see with young pitchers is rushing to finish the pitch and cutting the follow-through short. The result? Often a high arm-side miss.
An incomplete follow-through can cost you:
✅ Velocity
✅ Command & movement
✅ Arm health
Instead, focus on:
•Extending fully toward the catcher
•Maintaining good posture with a flat back
•Letting the arm decelerate naturally across the body
•Finishing balanced and fielding-ready
A complete finish leads to a more consistent release point, better velocity, sharper movement, and reduced injury risk.
Coaching Tip: If you’re seeing high arm-side misses, don’t just tell athletes to “follow through more.” Check for poor leg drive, early trunk rotation, or the arm getting ahead of the body. Long toss, towel drills, and finish-position drills can help build a more efficient delivery.
