Shane Scott basketball 🏀 COACH SCOTT — “DON’T BENCH THEM FOR MISTAKES”

Players are going to make mistakes.

They’re going to turn the ball over.
They’re going to miss shots.
They’re going to make the wrong read.
They’re going to have bad games.

But coaches, our job isn’t to make them afraid of making mistakes.

Our job is to teach them how to respond to them.

If every mistake gets you pulled from the game, eventually an athlete stops playing with confidence. They stop taking chances. They stop trusting their instincts. They become afraid to fail.

And you cannot develop great players by coaching fear.

Bench the mistake—not the athlete.

Correct them. Teach them. Hold them accountable. Challenge them to make the next play.

Because the athletes who become great aren’t the ones who never make mistakes.

They’re the ones who learn, adjust, respond, and keep competing.

As coaches, we have to create an environment where our players know:

“You can make a mistake and still have my trust. But you have to learn from it.”

That’s coaching.

That’s development.

That’s leadership.

Don’t coach athletes to avoid mistakes. Coach them to become better because of them.
