In Greek mythology, the hero Heracles (also known as Hercules) was said to have wrestled with Antaeus, a giant who was the son of the sea god Poseidon and the earth goddess Gaea.

According to the myth, Antaeus was invincible as long as he remained in contact with the ground, which gave him strength from his mother, the earth. Heracles, however, was able to defeat him by lifting him off the ground during their wrestling match.

In the above marble relief, you can see the artist depicted the grappling technique known as the "knee wheel" or "hiza-guruma". This is a grappling that has been used in various martial arts for centuries, including ancient grappling styles. The technique involves using one's leg to sweep the opponent's leg out from under them and then throwing them to the ground.

One example of the use of the knee wheel in ancient grappling can be found in the sport of pankration, which was a popular combat sport in ancient Greece. Pankration allowed the use of both striking and grappling techniques and was considered one of the most brutal sports of its time.πŸ‘ŠπŸΌ

The knee wheel was also used in other grappling styles, such as Judo, where it is referred to as the β€œOsoto Gari”. The Osoto-gari is a common throw in the sport of judo and has its roots in traditional Japanese martial arts. Its history dates back to the Edo period in Japan (1603-1868) when various jujutsu styles were developed as a means of self-defense for samurai warriors.

Masahiko Kimura was a legendary Japanese judoka who is widely regarded as one of the greatest judo practitioners of all time. He was particularly known for his use of the osoto-gari throw, which he famously used to defeat the Brazilian jiu-jitsu icon Helio Gracie in a historic match in 1951. πŸ₯‹

Respect must be given to such a time tested technique that continues to be utilized to this day. πŸ™πŸΌ
