ATAK users — the Nucleus now ships with an onboard LoRa bridge. Connect to the node and both radios work automatically. The bridge manages the switch when distance or terrain calls for LoRa. No plugins or complicated setup required.  
New case and antennas round out the hardware update. On the software side: You can stream voice and video on ATAK, or use Reticulum and Jami support for encrypted mesh networking and carrier-independent voice, text, and video — running entirely on hardware you own. New Tailscale integration means remote updates and troubleshooting without anyone on-site.

It’s always a pleasure when we get to help demystify and deploy the tech that helps first responders in their work. Last weekend, Kenny from AT Labs was on the ground with members of the Cumberland County Rescue Squad, getting hands-on with the RM-2 and building out a comms setup that actually fits their mission. In their case, a particularly pesky holler that has a large number of vehicle crashes and also lacks traditional comms coverage.

This is where mesh radios like the RM-2 separate themselves. Traditional radios struggle in the exact environments SAR teams operate in—hollers, canyons, dense hills where line-of-sight breaks down and coverage maps start lying. A properly deployed mesh doesn’t care about those gaps. It adapts, routes, and fills in the dead space.

Our preferred software to use in the field is ATAK - but if your group is like CCRS, you might prefer CalTopo. That’s no problem for us, as AT Labs was able to get them set up with CalTopo as well.
