Katha Dance Theatre

Katha Dance Theatre Dance. Discover. Transform. KDT's teaching staff is comprised entirely of its Company members. Learn more about KDT's programming at https://kathadance.org/

Founded by Rita Mustaphi in 1987, Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) is a Minnesota-based dance company and school rooted in Kathak, the North Indian classical dance form. Kathak is an ancient dance form characterized by rhythmic footwork, graceful hand gestures, pirouettes, lyrical movements, and storytelling. KDT’s repertory strives to modernize and diversify Kathak in ways that make it relevant and incl

usive while still maintaining its cultural integrity. Students receive well rounded Kathak education that offers cultural and historical context for the art form, promotes technical precision, and encourages artistic expression in the classroom. In addition to performances and education, KDT’s programs include touring and outreach opportunities specifically tailored to suit the needs of individual communities. These programs deepen audiences’ connection to the material, helping KDT more effectively fulfill its mission to make Kathak universally accessible. Outreach programming options include master classes, lectures/demonstrations, residencies and workshops in dance or folk art.

Start your child's dance journey with KDT! Fall Semester is approaching, and we'd love to welcome them into our classroom. Our experienced teacher will lead students ages 6-10 in simple storytelling song dances to gradually introduce them to Kathak in an accessible way. Themes are often about animals and nature, familiar concepts that will help them relate to the dance movements while increasing their mind-body connection, coordination, and self-expression.

The class time is as follows:

Children (ages 6-10):
Saturdays, 9 - 9:45 am CT

Your child is free to learn virtually via Zoom or in-person at our beautiful and welcoming dance studio in St. Louis Park.

Tickets are now on sale for the world premiere of "Rang-E-Ishq - Colors of Love," coming to The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University October 10 (7:30 pm) - 11 (2 pm) (ASL-interpreted).

"Colors of Love" explores the universal power of love in all its iterations (divine, earthly, and in between) via classical North Indian Kathak dance and Sufi poetry. Choreographed by Rita Mustaphi and heavily influenced by Sufism, Colors of Love follows an unnamed narrator on his journey toward inner peace as expressed by dance and poetry. Full of explosions of color, emotional depth, and joy, is a Sufi/Kathak dance-theater meditation on the transformation of the human heart.

We're excited to open enrollment for another fun and fulfilling semester of Kathak classes! Our classes are open to dancers of all abilities and ages (6 and above). The semester begins on September 12 and runs through January 17!

Kathak is so much more than a dance style. It promotes artistic expression and creativity; increases athleticism, flexibility, and agility, positively impacting physical and mental health; establishes strong mind-body connections and coordination; and provides important cultural context and knowledge. Our rigorous curriculum encourages self-expression and creativity in the classroom while providing high-quality, authentic Kathak education of the Lucknow tradition.

New to KDT? Our classes for new beginners are as follows:

Children (ages 6-10):
Saturdays, 9 - 9:45 am CT

Youth/Adult (ages 11+):
Saturdays, 3:30 - 4:45 pm CT

If you are new to KDT but have previous Kathak experience, email us to determine class placement.

Deadline: enroll by September 8. Learn more and enroll now: https://www.kathadance.org/our-school/classes/
