👀 Did you know manatees don't have eyelids or eyelashes?
Instead, they close their eyes using a circular muscle that works much like the aperture of a camera! 📸 When the muscle contracts, the eye closes in a tight circle rather than with an upper and lower eyelid like ours.
And when they're underwater, a clear protective membrane covers their eyes, helping them see and protecting the surface of the eye.
Just another reason these gentle sea cows are some of the most unique animals in the water! 💙🐮🌊

A manatee’s lungs run almost the entire length of its body along its back and can grow to more than 3 feet (1 meter) long in adults. These impressive lungs do more than help manatees breathe—they also play a key role in controlling buoyancy, allowing them to easily move up and down in the water. Even more fascinating, manatees have a unique hemi-diaphragm instead of a single diaphragm like most mammals, giving them the ability to regulate each lung independently. POV: It's almost scallop season, but somehow it's still not July 1st. 😩😭

We've got the gear ready, the boat ready, and the crew ready... now we're just waiting on the calendar to cooperate. Until then, we'll be over here pretending it's opening day and dreaming about crystal-clear water, full mesh bags, and all the scalloping adventures to come. 🌊☀️🤿
