, scalloping, kayak and SUP rentals, dive gear to buy or rent, along with a plentiful gift shop. We love the manatees and have learned to balance your desire to see them with a respect for the animal, the laws and the local environment. Our tours are intended to be educational, as well as enjoyable. We are devoted to educating the public about the plight of the manatees and helping to protect the manatees from boat propellers and other man made hazards. Bird's Underwater is a proud sponsor of the Manatee Fund under the guidance of the Friends of the Chassohowitzka Wildlife Refuge. In the winter months, we go to the springs AND swim with manatees! During cold times of the year, the manatees use the springs to keep warm. ❄️

In the summer months, we swim with the manatees THEN go to the springs. There’s much more grass in other areas the bay and the manatees current focus is to eat! They are munching around the bay consuming up to 100 pounds of grass each! 🤯🌿

It may take a little patience to find the manatees, but our crew is prepared to show you around Kings Bay and teach you everything there is to know! You may spot birds, turtles, or even a dolphin along the way! 🐢

Grateful for some spectacular Manatee Mornings recently! 😍

There are not hundreds of manatees in the area at this time, but we typically have a few dozen scattered about the bay. After watching the Manatee Manners safety video and receiving a briefing from your Inwater Guide, you can enter the manatee’s world in a respectful way! 🩵

If a Manatee rises up for a breath near you, Freeze and Float! Take in the moment and don’t move a muscle, the extra sensory hairs on that manatee know where you are and how to avoid you! As they pass by in the close of proximity, it’s possible they’re even feeling your heart beat in the water! Wow!🤩

Our Gentle Giants come up the surface for a breath every 3-5 minutes when actively swimming about or munching on grass. While sleeping, it has been seen that they can stay down 10-15 minutes at a time before the need breath. The manatees lungs are almost the whole length of their body allowing them to be productive below the surface!🌊

This week, we were lucky enough to have a class from the University of Delaware come through Birds Underwater. These students worked vigorously this semester to become scuba certified, some up to rescue! Congrats everyone!! Good luck on your next adventures!!🤿💙

If a manatee approaches you to take a peak, use your Passive Observation skills and Manatee Manners. You should “Freeze and Float” until the manatee has passed by to ensure it is comfortable in its home and not startled. These Gentle Giants are sensitive to loud sounds and splashes in the water, so remain calm and quiet as much as possible!🤿💙
