Michael here with a thought for the weekend:
There is a wind advisory today; how does the environment affect your strategy for a street fight? The wind won’t blow my hair around but it can still affect by eyes when there are 30 or 40 mph gusts.

Michael here:
This Saturday (March 14) I am planning to do some weapon work at Sublette Park (on Southwest about two blocks east of Hampton) at 10 AM. If anyone wants to train, come on by. We don’t need to do weapons (in fact I would rather not until I know who I am working with)… If somebody wants to train, awesome. If nobody is around by 10:15 I will disappear since weapons in public smacks of attention seeking.
Sublette Park is small; a baseball/soccer field, a hill and a playground. I will be closer to the playground. If this works for anyone I can bring targets/kickshield in the future.

Michael here: The weather is getting nicer. Anyone up for some blue sky training*? Weekends probably work best but I am open to evenings. I am willing to work with all experience levels or with any weapons which won’t cause people to call the cops; particularly willing to work with those returning to training and/or dealing with physical limitation.
Because I have been gone for a while and lots of y’all don’t know me, I have been teaching Black Dragon classes since 1992**. I am on The Hill but any park will do so location is flexible.

If you are seeing this post can you please just reply in the comments? Any reply, a word, a letter. I want to do a head count.
The powers that be recently alerted us they were no longer recommending our page due to community violations. I (Michael) asked for clarification and got very vague information that leads me to believe that the web lords feel content posted, apparently violent in nature, has nothing to do with our purpose… which is promoting martial arts and self defense (not only our own school, system or technique).
I responded asking for clarification and have gotten no response!
I just want to make sure we are still connecting with our members, friends and fellow martial artists. Thank you in advance.

Michael here with a question:

Does anyone know if there is a quality propylene tonfa (guai) on the market, preferably large?

I love polypropylene weapons. I have double sticks, an oxtail knife, a Cold Steel bokken and a Cold Steel walking stick which are great. But many polypropylene “training“ weapons are absolute crap. I have gone through several swords which were toys (at best) and my double sticks are cut down from a “bo staff” which was a total joke!

What are the disadvantages of your everyday clothes?

Can you actually throw that kick you are so proud of in a pair of jeans? The shoes you wear to work? Your dress clothes? Have you ever thrown punches in your heavy coat? Can you grab or claw in your gloves?

Michael here; this is my personal sermon for all Black Dragon students and friends.

This is not about politics at all (so don’t start) but recent events are prompting me to remind everyone when you choose to carry a weapon (firearm, knife, stun gun, pepper spray or whatever) it is true that weapon very well may save your life or others’ lives in some situations BUT the presence of a weapon always escalates a situation. Always.
It may, for example, make you the focus or primary target in a violent confrontation. It may force a tense situation to rise to violence. Also, you can never assume a concealed weapon is invisible and unknown to those around you. Ike and I have sat in many a bar playing “spot who is carrying” and plenty of other people do too. It is part of training and being aware. Back in the day Alex literally made it into a drinking game!
Black Dragon believes in responsible training with weapons of all sorts. We believe in learning proper safety and maintenance procedures for said weapons. I am not saying ”do not carry a weapon,” I am saying to carefully consider all factors and possibilities before choosing what, when and if to carry.

Responsibility is a foundation of martial arts. 黑龙！

Okay, the hot weather is moving on so let’s do some outdoor training! I realize this weekend is busy with the holidays so let’s aim for next Saturday and/or Sunday morning (the 6th or 7th… I think).
