Happy Sunday! Continuing in my Small Business Spotlight!
Today we spotlight Sterling Monument Company of Crystal City with owner Jerry Mata. He is a lifelong resident of Crystal City and has had many roles here. Let's see what he has to say.
Why did you decide to start this business?
I started my Sterling Monument Company and Memorial Creations business because I saw something that didn’t sit right with my heart. Too many families were facing one of the most painful moments of their lives while also feeling overwhelmed by the financial burden of honoring their loved one.
I believed there had to be a better way.
I wanted families in our community to have choices — beautiful monuments, dignified caskets, and meaningful memorials — without feeling like those options were out of reach. Every life deserves to be honored with respect, regardless of a family’s financial situation.
For me, this business is not just about selling a product. It’s about helping families preserve a legacy.
A monument is something that will stand for generations. A casket is the final place where we lay our loved ones to rest. Those decisions matter, and families deserve someone who will guide them with honesty, compassion, and respect.
That’s why I started this work — to serve my community, to make memorials more accessible, and to ensure that every family has the opportunity to honor their loved one with dignity.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just business for me… it’s a calling.
⸻
What was your biggest surprise in starting your business?
To be honest, I went into this business already understanding the work and the responsibility that comes with it. I knew what to expect in terms of the industry itself.
What truly surprised me was how deeply personal the experience becomes with every family.
When a family chooses a monument or a casket, it’s not just a purchase. It represents love, memories, and the final way they honor someone who meant everything to them. Being trusted to help guide those decisions is something I don’t take lightly.
What surprised me most was realizing just how much families appreciate honesty, compassion, and someone who truly listens during such a difficult time.
That trust means everything to me, and it reminds me every day why I chose this work.
⸻
What is your favorite product or service you offer and why?
One of my favorite things we offer is memorial monuments. A monument is more than just stone — it’s a permanent tribute to a life that was loved and remembered.
Funeral services last a day or two, but a monument stands for generations. Families, children, and even grandchildren will visit that place and remember the person who meant so much to them.
What I value most is helping families design something that truly reflects their loved one’s story — something meaningful that will stand the test of time. Knowing that I helped create a tribute that will honor someone’s legacy for decades is incredibly fulfilling.
For me, it’s not just about the monument itself — it’s about preserving memories and giving families a place to remember, reflect, and stay connected to the people they love.
⸻
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced early on?
One of the biggest challenges early on was simply building awareness and trust within the community. When you start a business that serves families during such emotional moments, people want to know they can rely on you.
It takes time for families to learn who you are, understand your values, and see that you truly care about serving them with compassion and honesty.
In the beginning, a lot of our effort went into educating people that they have options when it comes to monuments and caskets, and that honoring a loved one doesn’t have to create an overwhelming financial burden.
Over time, as families experienced our service and shared their experiences with others, that trust began to grow. Today, many of the families we serve come through word-of-mouth and community relationships, which is something I’m incredibly grateful for.
⸻
How do you get your name out there or attract new customers?
For me, the most important way my business grows is through relationships and trust within the community. When you help a family during one of the most difficult moments in their lives, they remember how they were treated. If you serve people with honesty, compassion, and respect, word naturally spreads.
A large part of our growth has come from word-of-mouth referrals from families we’ve served, and that means a lot to me because it shows they trusted the care we provided.
I also stay active in the community and use social media to share information, educate families about their options, and show the memorial products and services we offer. The goal isn’t just promotion — it’s helping people understand that they have choices and that they can honor their loved ones in meaningful ways.
At the end of the day, the best marketing is simply treating people right and standing behind the service you provide.
⸻
What keeps you motivated or what is your “why”?
What keeps me motivated is knowing that the work we do truly matters to families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Losing a loved one is never easy, and being able to help a family honor that life with dignity and respect is something I take very seriously.
My “why” is the opportunity to serve my community with compassion and integrity. Every monument we create and every casket we provide represents someone who was loved, someone who had a story, and a family that deserves to remember them in a meaningful way.
Knowing that I can help families create a lasting tribute to their loved one, while also guiding them through a very emotional moment, is what continues to drive me every day.
For me, it’s not just about running a business — it’s about making sure every life is honored and every family feels supported.
⸻
How has your business changed since you first started?
Since the beginning, the heart of the business has remained the same — serving families with compassion, honesty, and respect. What has changed the most is the growth in experience, trust, and the relationships we’ve built within the community.
When we first started, a lot of the focus was on simply introducing people to our services and letting families know they had options when it came to monuments and caskets. Over time, as more families placed their trust in us, the business began to grow through word-of-mouth and community support.
We’ve also been able to expand our selection and improve the way we serve families, offering more personalized memorial options and helping families create tributes that truly reflect their loved one’s life.
What means the most to me is seeing how the business has grown not just in size, but in the trust and relationships we’ve built with families throughout the community.
⸻
What is a typical day like for you?
No two days are ever exactly the same in this line of work, but most days revolve around helping families and making sure every detail is handled with care.
A typical day might include meeting with families to help them select a monument or casket, discussing design ideas for memorials, coordinating orders, and making sure everything is prepared properly for delivery or installation. I also spend time communicating with families, answering questions, and guiding them through decisions that are often very emotional.
There’s also a lot that happens behind the scenes — working on designs, coordinating with suppliers, and making sure every monument or memorial product meets the standards I want for the families we serve.
At the end of the day, my focus is always the same: making sure each family feels supported and that their loved one is honored with dignity and respect.
⸻
If you had to start over today, what would you do differently?
If I had to start over today, I would probably focus earlier on educating the community about the options available to them when it comes to monuments and caskets. Many families don’t realize they have choices outside of what is presented at the time of need.
Over time, I’ve learned that when people understand their options ahead of time, it helps reduce stress during an already difficult moment.
I would also invest sooner in building stronger visibility through community relationships and outreach, because trust and awareness are everything in this type of work.
At the same time, every experience along the way has helped shape the way I serve families today. Those lessons have made the business stronger and have helped me better understand what families truly need during those difficult moments.
⸻
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
My advice would be to always remember that success in any business — especially one that serves families during difficult moments — is built on trust, integrity, and genuine care for people.
Focus on serving others first. When you treat people with honesty, respect, and compassion, the business will naturally grow through the relationships you build.
I would also encourage anyone starting out to be patient. Building a reputation takes time, but consistency and hard work will eventually speak for themselves.
Most importantly, stay true to your purpose. If your goal is to truly help people and make a positive difference in your community, that will always guide you in the right direction.
Thank you Jerry for taking the time to answer my questions and for giving back to our little hometown
