Chair Pilates and Chair Yoga classes!

Do you have the Silver&Fit or Active&Fit fitness benefit plan through your healthy insurance? Five no-cost classes/month are available for you! Contact your plan to verify your coverage, then contact The Studio to get your classes booked!

Meet Deborah! Deborah has TWO chair classes that she offers at The Studio.

Chair Pilates (Mondays at 11 AM) is a low-impact workout that modifies traditional Pilates exercises and breathing to be performed using a sturdy chair or using it for standing support. It builds core strength, posture, and flexibility without requiring you to get on the floor, making it highly accessible for beginners or older adults. The deep core strengthening and rotational mobility work together to build a strong, flexible, and pain-free back. Props used are a mat, light weights and a ball.

Chair Yoga (Wednesdays at 10:30 AM) is an accessible form of yoga that adapts traditional flows, poses and breathing techniques while seated in a chair or using it for support. It allows individuals with limited mobility or beginners to safely improve their flexibility, strength, and balance, and well-being. The five foundational directional spinal movements ease stiffness and boost posture, help improve circulation, and enhance mobility. A calming final relaxation for stress reduction completes the session. Props used are a mat, light weights, and a cotton strap.

My Suspension Strength & Mobility class begins on June 17th! πŸ˜ƒ Every Wednesday at 12:15 (45 min class). πŸ˜ƒ Excellent for all adults! It is equally safe and joint-friendly for beginners and older adults through advanced participants. Book your session now!

What is the equipment used? Suspension training utilizes two adjustable straps anchored on the wall, near the ceiling. We use the TRX system in our classes.☺️

Suspension training is a dynamic total body workout that uses adjustable anchored straps with gravity for muscle resistance. πŸ‘πŸΌ

Progression from beginner to advanced is as easy as moving your hands or feet. Suspension bodyweight fitness develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. πŸ–€

Even when the focus is on conditioning the arms or legs, suspension fitness constantly challenges the core for a true total body workout. ☺️

Wobbling is a good thing! When you wobble on a single leg for 30 seconds:

- your body is making micro-adjustments. Each of these micro-adjustments acts as a repetition for your stabilizers, building the reflexive strength needed to catch yourself if you lose your footing.

- it is the nervous system actively building new nerve pathways to improve coordination, joint stability, and fall prevention.

- it is teaching your brain to quickly integrate feedback from your eyes, inner ears, and joints.

- it means your body is learning how to center your weight over a single base of support. Embracing the wobble over time translates to much steadier movements in daily life.

May is National Fitness Month! Here's your opportunity to renew your fitness goals and make positive changes to stay healthy.

As older adults, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes paramount to ensuring longevity and enhancing quality of life. Regular exercise can bolster energy levels, improve balance, promote mental well-being, and stave off illness. However, the fitness aspirations of seniors need to be met with a sense of adaptability and safety. The most effective exercises tailored for seniors, with a focus on fostering balance, cardiovascular health, strength/resistance training and flexibility.

Top Exercises to Keep Seniors Active and Healthy:

1. Balance, Coordination, Agility: Improves stability, reduces the risk of falls, and enhances overall mobility. Circuit/Interval and/or Chair Yoga 2-3/week

2. Aerobics for Cardiovascular Health: Perform at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity movement, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity movement a week through activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, dancing, or other moderate-intensity activities, where you can talk but not sing.

3. Strength/Resistance Training: Helps combat sarcopenia (muscle loss) and osteoporosis. Perform exercises that work all major muscle groups, (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, arms) with weights, resistance band, or body weight. Circuit Interval and/or Chair Pilates, Chair Yoga 2-3/week

4. Flexibility: Stretching exercises to maintain a range of motion and joint vitality. The stretches should be performed slowly and gradually, holding each one for 15 to 30 seconds. Chair Pilates, Chair Yoga 2-3/week

5. Mental Health Boost: Exercise has been linked to reduced anxiety, depression, and improvements in cognitive function.

For optimal results, the American College of Sports Medicine suggests combining cardiovascular exercise with strength training exercises at least two to three days a week.
