Fired up to say I killed the biggest buck of my life last night, and at the same piece I killed my first deer 20 years ago. I hadn’t seen a deer the entire hunt, about 15 minutes before I was planning to get down I decided to rattle. Sure enough a minute later I hear footsteps coming out of the bottom. He came all the way up and stopped at 20 yards, that’s all she wrote. What a hunt. Mature South Carolina 10 point

While my deer season is off to a slow start, Josie was able to get on her first track of the season for my buddy Chris. He shot it at 6pm on Saturday, once he started looking there was no blood or anything to go off of but he knew he had hit the deer. 18 hours later Josie and I rolled into town and after a quick search and 380 yards we had the buck! I’ve had Josie on a lot of deer the past few years and knew she had it in her, but getting there so long after the shot, I was one proud dog dad. Looking forward to the rest of the season, hopefully I can seal deal sometime soon.

Took a week to get through all of the pictures and pretty hard to pick through. Couldn’t have had a better trip to Banff and Glacier. We’ll be back.

Wild turkey breast stuffed with prosciutto, mozzarella, and basil on a bed of roasted tomatoes and onions. Pulled this one from The Turkey Book and it was a great summertime meal. Got a lot of breast in the freezer to try out more recipes from a great book.

Couldn’t have asked to a better couple days in the Keys with the family. We came down here 10 years ago and tried our hardest to catch a tarpon on our own boat and struck out. Finally, 10 years later everything lined up and it it was awesome. To say this least, I’ve got a new obsession. Will have to do it again soon.

In the span of 48 hours my season went from looking pretty grim to being tagged out. After having success with Aaron yesterday I decided to head back to cross hill, where I have not been having very much luck this season. I started off the morning where I had heard some gobbles last weekend and it was completely silent. Once the sun came up I did a little calling and quickly had 5 Jake’s on top of me. Once they went on their way I figured it was best to move to the opposite side of the property. As I’m moving over there I call every couple hundred yards and eventually strike one up. He gobbled back a few times but there was a hen between us that he ventured off with. I decided to sit down and see if I could wait him out. After about 30 minutes, I guess he got tired of her and let out a gobble about 120 yards away. I called back and got a quick response, in less than 2 minutes he was in full strut within 20 yards. Hell of a way to fill my last tag in SC.

After 3 weeks of getting my butt handed to me in the SC turkey woods it finally came together how it was supposed to. Aaron and I got to the top of this ridge where he has seen some birds a few days ago, I let out a crow call and he gobbled no more than 60 yards away. We quickly sat down and after some soft yelps and a fly down he was in our laps. Feels good to hold one again. One week to go.

After a slow year in the South Carolina duck swamps, the cold weather gave me the best SC hunt of my life this morning. It’s not often that you’re fighting with ice here, but this weekend it was everywhere. This morning I was lucky enough to find an open hole in the swamp that they wanted to be in without hesitation. I had my limit in 30 minutes, can’t say that’s ever happened before. Enjoyed the rest of the morning watching my dad and aaron pick off a few more to give us 12 in all. This morning will be one I think about for a very long time.

Wild Turkey and wild rice soup. It’s really getting time to do some serious freezer cleaning and it’s nice and cold so turkey soup was on the menu. Got this recipe from and it could not have been any better. Highly recommend to anyone that’s still got some breast sitting in the freezer.

Been a pretty good week in the woods. Was able to knock this guy down this morning. Had seen a lot of deer and smaller bucks chasing, finally at about 9:30 a doe came busting out of the woods and he was right on her tail. He didn’t make it far!

Had a fantastic opening weekend with these 2 guys. Have been hunting with them this weekend for as long as I can remember! Dad sealed the deal on this big 9 this morning, thank goodness cause one of us needed to do something! 191lb SC 9 point. Good stuff.

I had a real close encounter with the triple beam buck I’ve been after Friday morning, few more steps and I would have had him but he had the young ladies trotting the other direction on his mind. Seen a lot of chasing bucks this weekend, it’s starting to turn on up here! Can’t wait to see how the rest of the season pans out.
