Finished out my South Carolina season this morning in Landrum with my good buddy

We got in just before sunrise, snuck across the field, and got to the tree line to listen. I hooted after a second and we quickly realized we had got a little too close. He was right over our heads and somehow had not busted us. We hit the deck and crawled to the closest trees. As the sun came up he sounded off again and I realized he was in the same tree aaron was against.

After a while pitched down over the ridge out of sight probably 80 yards away and was joined by 2 others. We quickly adjusted for a better set up and after 30 minutes or so of back at forth he popped his head over the hill at 7:25. This turkeys gobbles were some of the loudest and clearest I’ve ever heard and this morning is surely one I won’t forget.

He was a hammer of a turkey with an 11” beard and 1.25” spurs so that was exciting. Till next year Turks.

Fantastic day at the ! Been trying for years to get on a double with and was finally able to get it done this morning. They gobbled their heads off and gave us a quick morning, walking back to the truck at 7:15. Both of these birds had DNA samples taken to be sent off to for his continued research on wild turkeys. Already looking forward to next year!

Tomahawk venison backstrap, sous vide at 130 then seared hot on the green egg.
Roasted potatoes and an arugula salad on the side. Simple and done right.

Same property I killed my first turkey on.
Same woods my killed hers.

This morning, it was turn.

She texted me Thursday and said she wanted to go this weekend. I hesitated for a second because I had been looking forward to getting after one myself… but I knew I’d enjoy calling one in for her a whole lot more.

We got in there at daylight and didn’t hear a single gobble. Not one. Dead silent.

We started covering ground, easing through the woods and throwing out a call here and there just trying to strike one. After a while we finally got a gobble way off in the distance.

We sat down and worked him slow. Called… waited… called again.
He answered… and then two more lit up with him.

They cut the distance in half quick.

We finally put eyes on them, and the boss was in full strut working his way in. But like they love to do, he hung up at about 60 yards and just stood there looking.

I tried everything… scratching in the leaves, soft calling, giving him time. But he could tell that the mystery hen should be in his eyesight.

After what felt like forever, he eased in just a little more.

40 yards.

I told her he wasn’t coming any closer and that she needed to take him.

She didn’t hesitate.

Not her first hunt… but her first turkey.

Hard morning. Late gobbles. Had to earn every bit of it.

Same old reliable spot… just another story added to it. 🦃🔥

Fired up to say I killed the biggest buck of my life last night, and at the same piece I killed my first deer 20 years ago. I hadn’t seen a deer the entire hunt, about 15 minutes before I was planning to get down I decided to rattle. Sure enough a minute later I hear footsteps coming out of the bottom. He came all the way up and stopped at 20 yards, that’s all she wrote. What a hunt. Mature South Carolina 10 point

While my deer season is off to a slow start, Josie was able to get on her first track of the season for my buddy Chris. He shot it at 6pm on Saturday, once he started looking there was no blood or anything to go off of but he knew he had hit the deer. 18 hours later Josie and I rolled into town and after a quick search and 380 yards we had the buck! I’ve had Josie on a lot of deer the past few years and knew she had it in her, but getting there so long after the shot, I was one proud dog dad. Looking forward to the rest of the season, hopefully I can seal deal sometime soon.

Wild turkey breast stuffed with prosciutto, mozzarella, and basil on a bed of roasted tomatoes and onions. Pulled this one from The Turkey Book and it was a great summertime meal. Got a lot of breast in the freezer to try out more recipes from a great book.
