Been awhile between posts. I'm admittedly not real big on Facebook. I do have a recent report on some great tarpon fishing in Mexico, where I spend several weeks a year.
We recently fished with my friends at TarponTown.com in Campeche, Mexico on the western slope of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Contrary to popular opinion on Mexico, the upper Yucatan is safer than most American cities and a real pleasure to experience the fine climate and people there.
Oh, did I mention the fishing? I'm a tarpon freak and have been for over 30 years, ever since I caught my first baby tarpon on Grand Cayman in the late 80's.
I focus on baby (6 - 12 pounds) and adolescent (15 to 40 pounds) tarpon that live in and around the entire Yucatan Peninsula. I don't fish for giant tarpon (over 100 pounds) anymore due to the degradation of the fisheries, the cost, and the competition in south Florida.
Here's a shot of a recent melee we experienced when a large migration of adolescent fish besieged us on the final day of our trip on November 22, 2019.
We used 9wt fly rods, I demo'd the new Salish Saltwater fly rods from Maxxon, as well as their MAX fly reel (available at FlyBass.com) for these fantastic fish.
The coolest thing about fly fishing tarpon is it's all sight fishing and these big fish will eat flies the same size that a three pound smallmouth bass will hit.
Incredible!!
