Ballet Term of the Week 🩰
Ballon - from French, meaning “bounce.”
In ballet, ballon describes the quality that makes a dancer appear light, buoyant, and suspended during jumps.
It’s not simply about jumping high. From a biomechanics perspective, ballon involves the ability to generate force quickly during takeoff, coordinate the body during flight, and absorb force efficiently during landing.
A dancer with good ballon can make a jump look effortless… even though the body is producing and controlling a lot of force. And that feeling of “floating” isn’t magic… it’s biomechanics!
