What is a Regulator?
In June 1841, a group of Ogle County citizens formed a vigilante group calling themselves the Regulators. Their purpose was to rid the country of a large group of outlaws known as the Driscoll Gang or the Prairie Bandits. The Prairie Bandits were thought to be responsible for the burning of the new Ogle County Courthouse as well as years of horse stealing, robbery, assault and murder. John Driscoll and his son William, two leaders of the Prairie Bandits, were captured by the Regulators. The vigilantes tried and executed the two men on the spot by a 111-person firing squad. All the members of the Regulators firing squad were later found by the court to be not guilty of the executions. The Prairie Bandits’ crime wave ended.
