Kendo is the path of building character through the practice of the principles of the sword. Kendo requires, with equal importance, both mental and physical development and control. Thus, the practitioner will be able to develop a rich outlook on life and be able to put the culture of Kendo into use, thereby benefitting from its value in their daily lives.
Descended from kenjutsu and steeped in tradition, kendo today is one of the most popular martial arts disciplines in Japan with increasing popularity throughout the rest of the world.
Students will learn kendo from the fundamentals such as use of the shinai, footwork, basic strikes, as well as the tools such as etiquette and discipline, needed to better develop not only as a sword fighter and martial artist, but as a person.
Until now, the only dedicated Kendo program available in Pittsburgh had been the University of Pittsburgh Kendo Club. Our program is run in conjunction with the practitioners and teachers of the University of Pittsburgh Kendo club, a member of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) and an officially recognized kendo club by International Kendo Federation (FIK).
