Pick-Up Sports

Pick-Up Sports Give your child the power to choose from a wide range of sports as they get older. Hello! Doing all this was common back then- it's just what you did.

We at Pick-Up Sports are in the business of getting your child physically and socially active by introducing them to a wider variety of sports that any other program. I am Michael Meola, founder of Pick-Up Sports, and I want to tell you a little bit about why I do what I do. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to be able to play as many sports as I could from baseball to basketball, football, socce

r and track. This helped me to fully develop as an athlete, prevent overuse injuries, and make friends in every sport I played, many that I still have to this day. Being able to meet a wide variety of people in different sports growing up was invaluable to me as I made my way into middle school and high school. Not only that, but being able to play a different sport every season kept each one fresh and interesting. Overall, playing all these sports early on was one of my biggest influences growing up, and I'm so grateful I did. So, why does my childhood story matter to you? Well, as I explained, playing several sports growing up is something that develops a child's body and mind more completely. So, when I noticed the alarming trend of young athletes specializing in one sport, it made me want to take action because every child deserves the opportunity to grow up like I did and do what kids are meant to do. The MLB said it best: Let the kids play.

Happy Friday! Today's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Week is Steve Nash! Living in Canada for most of his early life, Nash was exposed to soccer and rugby long before he played basketball, using the agility and athleticism he got from them to become one of the best Point Guards of all time.

We're sticking with a baseball player for this week's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Week, Jacob deGrom! deGrom, widely known as baseball's best pitcher, was a fiercely competitive baseball and basketball player at Calvary Christian Academy. He was so good at basketball, his teammates even claimed he could've played in college. Instead, he played baseball at Stetson, converting to pitcher from Short Stop after his sophomore season. We think he made the right choice.

Happy Friday! This week's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Week is NJ's own Mike Trout! While at Millville HS, Trout was a two-sport standout in baseball and basketball. He once said basketball "keeps me in great shape, helps me with my speed." so it's no secret that basketball played a role in helping Trout become the athlete he is today.

Happy Friday! Today's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Week is legendary former San Diego Chargers Tight End Antonio Gates. Gates is different from all other featured athletes in that he only played basketball in college! He had no intention on playing in the NFL until basketball scouts told him he didn't have a future in the NBA. Gates was also the first of a long line of basketball players that used their athletic ability from basketball to switch over to the NFL!

Happy Friday everyone! We have a treat for this week's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Week. It's the greatest basketball player of all time (yeah we said it) Michael Jordan! We had to make the text a little smaller to fit all his accolades, and that doesn't even cover it! Jordan really was one of the most polarizing multi-sport athletes of all time and was freakishly athletic enough to compete in AA baseball despite not playing since high school!
