While many residents fleeing Ukraine are trying to take their pets and animals with them, thousands of displaced horses, donkeys, burros and other animals remain behind and, like the people of Ukraine, need your help.

The Foundation for the Horse, the AAEP's charitable arm, will be donating all disaster gifts received in March 2022 to trusted veterinary and equine organizations it identifies in Europe providing emergency relief to horses and animals in impacted areas with the capabilities to provide care on the ground.

Visit The Foundation’s Disaster Relief page to donate and learn more about how we are connecting with veterinary groups and animal charities that are supporting those in need: https://www.foundationforthehorse.org/impact/disaster-relief/

Recently we heard from a friend in Ukraine, that several of the people that own horses are walking them to the forests and letting them go. The best chance they can give them to survive is the freedom to make their own choices, instead of waiting for a family who’s not there to give them food and water.
As we walk our horses to and from the pastures this morning knowing they are safe and sound… we silently say prayers for a country filled with people and animals who are doing everything they can just to stay alive. ❤️‍🩹
As you spend time with your animals and the people you love today, please pray for Ukraine. 🇺🇦❤️🙏

Horse Friends, with the upcoming extreme winter weather approaching I wanted to remind us of a few winter watering tips:
1. Horses drink within 2 hours of eating. Please make sure your horse has fresh water available at meal times.
2. Feed or syringe 60 cc ( 2 ounces) of regular table salt to encourage drinking. Even picky drinkers will drink when they are fed salt.
3. The number one cause of colic is DRINKING FROM A BUCKET. This is why it is extremely important to clean water buckets (scrub not just dump) at least once a day.
4. Drinking horses do not colic. (in most cases!)
5. A soccer ball can be placed in a large water trough to help slow freezing as it helps the water circulate.

We do not know what the roads will be like with this upcoming winter storm. We will have a veterinarian on call for our current horse clients. The meteorologists are predicting treacherous road conditions that may be impassable. We cannot control the weather but we can try and plan for prevention.

Did you know that Kentucky is home to over 242,000 horses?! Though racing enthusiasts might know be most familiar with our Thoroughbreds, there are multiple other breeds that call Kentucky home. In fact, many of these breeds have their own state-wide organizations that host shows, events and educational opportunities; this not only encourages participation by the younger generation, it keeps our equine industry strong. The industry’s strength is dependent on a Kentucky economy that is forward moving: Kentucky’s economy is bolstered by historical horse racing (HHR) which is why it’s critical for HHR legislation to pass.
Here’s a quick breakdown of just a few of the breeds that can be seen all over our great state:

Thoroughbreds: 54,000
Quarter Horses: 42,000
Tennessee Walking Horses: 36,000
American Saddlebreds: 14,000
Donkeys and Mules: 14,000
Mountain horse Breeds: 12,500
Standardbreds: 9,500
