Remember to Live

John was killed fighting on the frontlines of Ukraine last week. The hole he left is massive and the my soul feels unable to comprehend a world without him. He impacted all those he touched deeply just by being who he was. He was willing to give up his own peace and comfort here in the US so that others half way around the world he never met had a chance to experience what it felt like. John was a man, a friend and a brother unlike any other.

"Every Man Dies, Not every man really lives." That was one of Johns favorite quotes, and he embodied it with his life. John was a true Ronin. He believed in the ethos and gave everything to embody it and share it with others. Ronin would have not been possible, or had been the community it was without him. It was a shared vision and I'll forever owe him a debt of gratitude for being the spark that ignited the flame and the rock that held through the tough times.

John had been fighting for the last 6 months in the places in Ukraine you see on the news daily. He was sent on a mission to secure the last road out of a city being overrun to allow people to evacuate. In doing so, John and a small squad came against a force that was bigger than anyone expected and there were no reinforcements. John held his position, fighting for over 24hrs, through helicopter attacks, aerial drone strikes and infantry assaults until he was killed. He gave his life so that as others could live.

The pain and grief of his loss feels unreal. It's often the ones who mean the most that you take for granted. They are the foundation on which everything is built. The air you breath that you don't even think about. His loss feels unbearable.

Hug and appreciate your loved ones. Let whatever it was in Johns spirit that lit you up carry on in you so that his spirit can continue on and...remember to live, to really live. Life is a temporary gift. Use it. Embrace it. To its fullest. For John.

Travis

(If you feel led to, there is a gofundme here to help bring John back to the US. His remains are still lying where he fell as his body is behind enemy lines. There is a group of people raising funds to support his return and for causes he felt passionate about.)

If you'd like to connect, share memories of John, or need anything at all- please feel free to do so here for all to see- or you if you'd like to connect personally- you can reach me at [email protected] or 425-578-4774 as I am not on Facebook.

Thank you all for being a part of the community that John was so proud to have been a part of creating. It was his why in life for many years. Share the joy, love and strength he gave to each of us.

Fellow Ronin,

Our ability to continue to offer training as we have in the past in Covington is no longer sustainable. We are still working on a solution to continue in that location, but have not presently been able to find a workable path forward and may not be able to with the extended closure and new limitations for fitness centers. Without a solution, we have decided to suspend operations and have cancelled all memberships.

King County is still in Phase I of re-opening. Gyms are not allowed to re-open until Phase III, and even then only with extremely limited capacity and regulations that will severely limit our ability to cover the overhead and not take away from what makes Ronin unique. With this extended closure, and limited operations once we can re-open it is not likely we will make it. To re-open, it will require a complete overhaul of how we operate and classes/memberships may look entirely different than it was in the past. For this reason, we have cancelled all memberships and can not offer any guarantee that we will be able to reopen in Covington.

Ronin will continue to offer training in the pursuit of being Authentically Fit but like many businesses we will have to adapt to the changing environment we are now in. We will keep posting content on social media: training for the quarantine, new videos, at-home workouts, outdoor events, and new opportunities within the COVID business guidelines as soon as we are able. Keep an eye on our Social media pages for the latest updates.

Thank you for almost 10 amazing years. Ronin was founded in winter 2011 and has been what it was because of all the members that made it a special place. A place full of joy and love; suffering and hard work; a place where we shared amazing successes and spectacular failures all while getting fit, having fun, and learning new skills.

Thank you for sharing your lives with us. We will forever be grateful.

Team Ronin
Travis, Deanne, Heidi and John

Making this decision has been agonizing and was not made lightly. We spent a lot of time reflecting back on all the years, from training outdoors and in a bare bones warehouse to the one of a kind place that it became and all the crazy adventures that happened in between. If you'd like to take a trip down memory lane with us, we made a slide show to see all the changes over the years. It was a lot of fun to make and hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it. Here's to unforgettable memories.

Warning: It's long! (10 minutes). It was a challenge to capture each year in a handful of photos and we did our best. Apologies to anyone we missed!

**Edit - we have been asked how you can support us. If anything on our social media resonates, please share with your friends and ask them to follow us for future training**
