Rules for the Backyard Ultra

1) Course

The Inaugural Arkansas Backyard Ultra Championship will take place at the Historic Big Springs Park in Cotter, Arkansas. The flat & scenic out-and-back route follows an old railroad bed along the White River and there's a Natural Spring to re-invigorate your beaten body after the race. Warm food will be provided every 6 hours and a menu will be announced prior to the event so you know what to expe

ct. There will also be water and electrolyte coolers available throughout the race at the starting area but all other energy/food support is provided by the runner. Each runner will have room for a chair and small bag/cooler by the corral. Runner spots by the corral are not first come, first serve and will be creatively handed out the night before the race at the pasta dinner and packet pickup. Once a runner times out, or decides they will not continue, they will ceremoniously bang the massive gong announcing they're done and remove their chair and belongings from the starting corral area; allowing other runners to move closer. The beauty of the backyard format is that it 'smooths' the advantages that age, gender, and speed oftentimes play in running events and rewards to a higher degree the runner with mental toughness and grit. There will be ONE winner; everyone else gets the gong and DNF. Let's get Arkansas on the Backyard map as a competitive destination race by putting up some big miles. As Laz often says, "It only takes two to tango"

Every registered runner will receive a commemorative ABUC soft cotton t-shirt, pint glass, pasta dinner, post-race beer, and the opportunity to be stoopid and amazing. The goal of this event is to become the official Arkansas Qualifier for Big's Backyard Ultra (organized by Lazarus Lake of Barkley Marathons fame). Loop or out and back (a completed loop is called a YARD in backyard lingo) Must be 4 miles 880 feet in length Metric equivalent 6.7056 kilometers

2) Starting Corral Measured to fit entire starting field Corral stays the same size thru out the event Participants must be in the starting corral at the bell

3) Starts Each loop starts precisely 1 hour after the last Warning must be given 3, 2, and 1 minutes prior to start All competitors must start at the bell (no late starts)

4) Loops Except for restrooms, competitor may not leave the course until each loop is completed No non-competitors on the course (including eliminated runners) No personal aid during a loop (common aid stations are allowed) Each loop must be completed within an hour to be counted… including the final lap. No artificial aids (including trekking poles) Slower runners must allow passes.

5) Timing Timing of the loops is optional

6) Winner/Results The winner is the last person to complete a loop All others are technically DNF Results of each runner in terms of distance covered are to be given. If no runner can complete one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.

7) Cap Race must be open ended.

Did you know the beautiful trail we have used to be called a bicycle trail? In 2006, Rusty first learned of the trail and he started to ride his mountain bike along the path. It was nearly overgrown, often no wider than a 4-Wheeler and it was no more than tire tracks through grass and rock. We're very thankful for the efforts to create and maintain what we have now.

What's the best part of Cotter Bridge Ultra?
We think it's seeing your friends and hanging out through the whole event! If you've ever been alone in the woods for hours on end, you probably know how special it is to have friends throughout.

Did you know that 2026 will be our 7th year to host a race at Cotter Springs? This includes the former Backyard style rules and a first "unofficial" year that was not recorded. It got us wondering, does anyone have 5 or 6 years and is coming for year 7?

Photo of the 2025 winner Matt Pruitt coming in strong on his 12th and final lap. Talk about an epic year of racing as we watched 4 guys all capable of throwing down a near sub 6 minute pace. Hope to see some incredible racing again in 2026!

Looking forward to shorts and tank top weather again!
