Just over 10 years ago, my daughter Amber (who was only 16 at the time) was doing CrossFit and encouraged me to try it. Back then, there was a Foundations class that everyone was required to take before joining regular classes. I agreed to sign up for Foundations but did not intend to go any further than that. On the day of Foundations graduation, I chose my daughter to count reps for me and encourage me during the final workout. The workout consisted of running and burpees, and it was horrible! Even though it wasn’t pretty, I completed the workout. Afterward, Amber looked at me and said, “Mom, this is the proudest I have ever been of you”. That’s when I knew I had to keep going. Fast forward to a decade later, and I have made it a part of my regular routine and have tried to consistently do CrossFit 3 times a week.
In 2018, I went through a divorce and a really tough time of transition. I was experiencing anxiety and depression like never before. There were many days when I didn’t know if I could make it. I found that one of the most helpful things I could do was to work out my anxiety by doing CrossFit. It was a type of therapy for me. I honestly don’t know if I could’ve survived that season of my life without Crossfit Enapay. I had friends and supporters at the gym that will never know what they meant to me during that time. I thank God for the community it provided for me then and still today.
Over the past 10 years, there have been very few workouts that I have not scaled. Instead of letting this frustrate me, I try to do the most difficult version of the workout that I am capable of. My motto has been “Even if I’m at the bottom of the whiteboard, I beat everyone that’s not on the whiteboard”. Even with scaling, I have seen improvements in muscle tone and my overall energy and endurance. It has even made me tougher both mentally and physically.
As I have gotten older, I have experienced a significant increase in joint pain. This has been my biggest challenge! I have considered quitting several times because I can no longer do some of the things I could do when I started. Throughout these struggles, I have found that the wonderful people at Crossfit Enapay (both coaches and fellow athletes) are always encouraging and never look down on me for the things I can no longer do. As I do step ups on the riser or do line taps instead of jump ropes, I never feel judged. Having support like that is priceless!
I would encourage anyone to try CrossFit. Even if everyone there seems younger, thinner, fitter, or more athletic than you, you will be able to find your place and what works best for you.
Stu & Amber Stark and the entire Crossfit Enapay community are very accepting of everyone regardless of athletic abilities.
I have seen a lot of changes at CrossFit Enapay over the years. New people have come and gone. The one thing that has remained the same is the sense of dedication, support, and community that surrounds this small-town gym. It is more than just a place to work out. It is a place to belong.
