Two people died in a four-vehicle traffic accident on State Highway 361 this afternoon, according to police.
"Several" other accident victims were taken to local hospitals in undetermined condition, said a news release issued by the Corpus Christi Police Department.
The accident happened in the 8100 block of 361, south of the Port Aransas city limits. (The photo with this post was shot near the accident scene.)
The highway has been shut down while police work at the accident scene.
A motorist stuck in a traffic jam near the wreck reported that at least 20 emergency vehicles were seen heading toward the site of the collision.

08/09 Tropical Update. NHC keeping chances the same on a couple spots to watch in the far Atlantic. 20% with some strong shear ahead as it nears the Caribbean, keeping long-range chances down. 40% with decent model support on development. Hasn't even left Africa yet so a lot of time to watch. EURO keeping the curve towards Bermuda. Always too soon to know for sure. The Corpus Christi Police Department wants you to be aware of road closures beginning tomorrow morning at 7 am until after the Mayor’s Big Bang Fireworks Show. Shoreline Blvd will be closed from IH 37 to Coopers Alley. There will also be NO PARKING on side streets. TOWING WILL BE ENFORCED WITH NO FEES.
There will be heavy pedestrian traffic in the downtown area. Expect delays. We want to ensure a safe and fun experience for all community members.

With increased tropical moisture in the region and a frontal system approaching the area this weekend, South Texas is in for a rainier week. These are the latest forecast rainfall amounts through Friday. While not everyone will see exactly these values, these tropical downpours are capable of producing rainfall on the high-end of the forecast. Where a storm moves over, visibility will quickly drop along with ponding/flash flooding. Make sure to remember when you come across a flooded road: Turn Around, Don't Drown!
