We see a student who didn’t complete the assignment.
A student who didn’t pay attention.
A student who looks like they just don’t care.
But what if we’re only seeing a fraction of the story?
What they spent the night sleeping on a couch because they don’t have a bed of their own?
What if they came to school hungry?
What if they’re carrying the weight of arguments,
addiction, neglect, fear, or responsibilities no child should have to carry?
Many students walk through our doors every day fighting battles we know nothing about.
While accountability matters, so does compassion.
Sometimes the student who seems the most difficult is the one struggling the most.
As teachers, we may never know every story.
But we can choose to lead with grace.
Patience won’t solve every problem,
but for a child who feels unseen, it might mean everything.
And sometimes, the lesson they need most isn’t on the paper in front of them—it’s knowing that someone cared enough to look beyond it.

Before tablets. Before Chromebooks. Before everything had a charger.

There was the smell of a brand-new box of crayons, the click of a fresh mechanical pencil, and the excitement of picking out the perfect Trapper Keeper.

Folders had neon colors. Pencil boxes rattled with erasers, pencil grips, and mystery treasures collected from the playground. Every backpack seemed bigger than the kid carrying it.

There were Lisa Frank notebooks covered in dolphins and tigers, scented markers that somehow all smelled amazing, and those giant erasers that disappeared long before the school year ended.

A new pack of loose-leaf paper felt like endless possibilities. A fresh composition notebook meant a fresh start. And somehow, sharpening a pencil was an important event.

These weren’t just school supplies. They were symbols of a new year, new friends, new teachers, and a hundred adventures waiting to happen.

If you grew up in the 90s, you know—back-to-school shopping wasn’t a chore.

It was a core memory.

When kids build, create, pretend, explore, and move, they’re developing skills that worksheets simply can’t teach. Some of the most important learning happens when children are given the time and freedom to play.
