Approximately 11,000 pickleball players used the 10 dedicated pickleball courts at the Al Kruse Center last year, compared to 1000 players on the 7 tennis courts. For those passionate about pickleball in Corpus Christi, watching this sport bring our community together—families, seniors, newcomers—only to face a shortage of places to play is frustrating.
The ask is straightforward: convert some of the existing tennis courts into dedicated pickleball courts. Pickleball is growing fast (22.8% last year alone), it needs less space than tennis, and it allows more people to play per square foot (1 tennis court = 4 pickleball courts). This isn't about removing tennis; it's about making smart use of what is already available so more neighbors can stay active and connected.
The conversion would be cost-effective, could happen in phases, and might even create new revenue for the center. If you think the Parks and Recs team should approve this conversion and bring our community closer to having the facilities we need, please sign the petition, especially if you have played pickleball at the Al Kruse Center or plan to play there in the future.
