How to Properly Record your Swing
You are probably saying, "What’s the big deal here? You are the master of the selfie. But it is really important, especially if you are using the swing selfie to IMPROVE your swing. As you already know, sometimes what you feel and what you see on a video can be very different. If you record your swing regularly, it makes spotting a nuance or mistake easy. And it is fun to see your progression.
Charlie Parsons at theleftrough.com says you need to take your swing from two different angles. The first angle is DOWN THE LINE. This is how most people get their swing. This angle will help you evaluate your posture, alignment, and more.
The other angle is the FRONT ON angle or face-on one. It can be challenging if someone is next to you, but it is hugely important. From this angle, you will notice if you are swaying, where the ball position is, head movement, grip, and more.
When you look from these two angles, you can start analyzing your swing and find the areas you need to improve upon. Targeting your weaknesses is key to your improvement. Pick one or two areas and work on those.
It is key that you pick and aim for a target. Not choosing a target is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when practicing. Using alignment sticks on the ground also helps. Place your phone 12 -15 feet directly behind you for the “Down the Line” video. Ideally, you want to have your hands in the middle of the frame. Be sure to warm up before you start recording.
For the “Face On” angle, use your alignment sticks to make sure you are setting up square to the target. For this angle, you should use a tripod at hand height when you set up to the golf ball. The ball should be at the bottom of the frame, and your backswing should be at the top. Don’t forget to do some slow-motion videos also from both angles. Don’t forget to record yourself putting as it could be very telling for such things like taking the putter too much inside or outside or if you have the ball incorrectly positioned.
Be sure that you save all of your swing videos. And while you instinctively want to DELETE the bad ones, don’t. Often, these are the ones that will teach you the most.
When you get a chance, make a short clip video of your good swings, which is a great thing to watch right before you play. It’s a great confidence booster.
