UBoot Rennen Werks

UBoot Rennen Werks Motorsports team for Endurance racing. We race 6-8 endurance races per year with Lucky Dog Racing League.

UBoot Rennen Werks was founded in November,2013 with the purchase of two Porsche 924's. Over the winter, the cars were stripped down, a tub chosen and one sent to the crusher. Car was completed for it's maiden voyage in April of 2014. We ran 4 events that year with 4 DNF's, last one ending with the car on fire at PIR in October. The newly installed fire suppression system functioned perfectly, sav

ing the car. 2015 started out with a couple of DNF's as well. By then, we had suffered enough failures to have developed the car into a contender. We started showing up on the podium with the addition of Josh Voight. With his addition, all four drivers are running within a second of each other at most tracks. 2016 was a banner year with podiums and an overall win at each race attended, ending in the Chumpcar West Coast Championship at Las Vegas, where we narrowly beat the fine team: Son of Andre.
2017 will be a very different season as Chumpcar's presence has diminished significantly and we pursue our passion with Lucky Dog Racing League as well.

I just realized I forgot to post a race recap from the April Ridge race with Lucky Dog. For this race, we had a great group of drivers with landscaper Adam Smith, data aficionado Paul Filsinger, and super chef Joshua Voigt. We also had quite the crew in attendance with Tom Claussen, is son Tim Claussen, my son Bryson Smith, and his girlfriend Arcadia.

Friday practice went pretty well, however there was some "floating" experienced down the front straight where the back of the car was moving around. I then felt a bit of a long pedal in the brakes, indicative of a wheel bearing going out....which was exactly the case with the driver side rear wheel. We replaced the bearing fairly quickly, however we also decided to change the passenger side rear bearing as it had a bit of play as well. It was then that we found the inner bearing casting on the control arm to have failed and we set about swapping that out, which took a bit longer to do, but we had the parts and got it done.

Saturdays race started off fairly well and we were in contention...until we experienced a reduction in engine power. This was determined to be a broken spark plug (see the pic below, it is supposed to have 3 electrodes, all of which had left the chat). We lost a few laps troubleshooting and replacing the plug, however we finished.

Sunday was a bit more exciting. I started off the race and the top-5 cars remained bunched up for the entire stint with some consistent laps throughout the stint. Paul drove second and really did a great job keeping us in the hunt, improving his laptimes and getting really comfortable in the car. Adam drove next and his stint was going well, until he had an off going around traffic which resulted in half of the splitter getting torn off and the radiator screen getting completely filled. We had to pit due to increasing water temps and to change drivers...unfortunately, just as we went back out for the last stint there was a full course yellow and our competitors were able to pit and put us a lap down...to 5th place.

In preparation of releasing the 2026 UBoot schedule dropping on Dec 15th, I thought I would do a little recap of the 2025 season. Overall, it was a fantastic year with great drivers and some very respectable results. We had 4 visits to the podium, going home with 2 race wins, a 2nd, and a 3rd trophy. We completed 1565 laps (out of a possible 1755 laps) across 9 races at 5 different tracks. Excluding our only DNF at the Ridge, our average finishing position was 4th. We had two major mechanical failures during the season, a failed front wheel bearing at The Ridge in April and a failed differential at The Ridge in Sept. Ironically, at both of those events we took the overall victory the next day. Between contact and passing under yellow, Black flags were our enemy at several races.

We might have one of the oldest cars on the grid, but it has been proven to be well sorted, fast, and reliable.

Now that the turkey has digested...time for a Thunderhill Race recap!

To start...anytime you can roll the car out of the trailer and drive it into the shop after a grueling 14hr race is a win in my book. For this race we had Britain Smith, Gary Chapman, Nicolas De Keyser, and Kirk Myhre as drivers and the father/son duo of Tom Claussen and Tim Claussen as mechanics/muscle. Great team all around!

The drama started about 30mins before cars were called to grid on Sat. I noticed an issue with the rear suspension rocker where the bearing had failed and the rocker was tilted over in the mount. The force of the suspension push-rod had actually bent the end of the rocker and I knew that was going to be a problem. We didn't have spare bearings for this part so in an attempt to band-aid the problem we found some perfectly sized 1/2" washers that we stacked into the place of the bearing and with a healthy amount a grease seemed to have served the purpose. We made it to the back of the grid with about 2mins to spare.

The first 7hrs of the race (Sat) went well with some good battles with the leaders all day. We had been running a very clean race with no mechanical issue or penalties. However, in the last few minutes of the day, we got caught in a battle for the lead and ended up passing under yellow. This resulted in a penalty to be served after the race went green the following morning.

The final 7hrs of the race (Sunday) started with a 4min penalty which put us a lap down immediately. With some incredible driving by Nicolas, some unfortunate racing incidents, and other teams mechanical misfortunes, we were actually able to work ourselves back onto the lead lap. However...on our 2nd stint we hit "The Curb" and bent a front right wheel. This same curb, the exit of 6W on the west course, has claimed a few of our wheel bearings and damaged wheels in years past, and has to be avoided at all cost. A quick pit to change a wheel cost us a lap and we ended up finishing that way. 5th overall, 4th for the championship.

Another great year for UBoot and some exciting off-season updates coming in preparation for 2026!

Okay...after a bit of a personal delay...I am getting on the race summary and data analysis for the ORP race with Lucky Dog Racing League a few weeks ago.

Overall, the weekend went great. It was a bit hot, but the car performed well and the drivers kept it on the track. Friday practice ran great with both Paul Filsinger and Adam Smith getting acquainted with the track and the car. It was a bit of a rush trying to get everyone on track in the limited time available since the weekend plan included both track directions.

Saturday morning started off with me putting the car on pole during qualifying with a 1:56.39 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WhSA3rI0SI), which was surprising considering the competition and the fact that the lap timer had a 2nd lap predictive to be 1.5secs even faster (1:55.1sec) before hitting traffic at the end of the lap. The race started off well, however some aggressive driving pushed us down to fourth. We spent the majority of the race in the top 4 and despite some late race blackflag penalties for passing under yellow, we finished in 3rd overall.

Sunday's race was HOT! In addition to some cockpit airflow modification to the car, the race implemented a 1hr driver stint requirement. This worked out great to keep the drivers fresh, however it left very little room for strategy. In the 2nd stint, we had a brake pedal failure and some heroics from Adam Smith to keep the car in check and bring it into the pits. Upon inspection, we quickly determined that the left rear brake pads had fallen out of the caliper due to a retaining pin failure. We grab another set of pads from the spares and back on-track in less than 10mins. Many thanks to Tom Claussen with his alligator hands to deal with the hot brakes. We spent the rest of the race staying cool and pumping out laps and eventually working our way to finish 2nd overall. Just to make things exciting, on the cooldown lap after the checkered flag we got a flat tire and had to limp the car back to the pits.
A great team and a great car always results in a great weekend. We have a few upgrades and improvements planned for our next race at The Ridge in Sept. See you then!
