ears to your life by learning from the sages. The martial arts originally were developed to protect oneself and loved ones from those who would harm them, whether they were armed or not. Thousands of years ago, Korea was an occupied country and no weapons were allowed. The families of the common people, or the children that were referred to as the Hwarang group, vowed a promise. The promise involved 100% effort and a code of ethics that included sportsmanship with excellence and courtesy in and out of the training hall or Do Jang, as it is commonly referred to. This overwhelming pride in the heritage and teachings of the originators of the sport and art of Tae Kwon Do / Kum Do carries on to these very days, some 2000 years later. The principles are still sound and relate to goodwill for all. Gain an ongoing commitment to pass on what you have learned as a student to insure that all can be bettered and gain from Tae Kwon Do and Kum Do lessons. See why Tae Kwon Do and Kum Do are such a huge part of the culture of so many countries, languages and martial artists today.

Pre-Testing is TONIGHT!

Before you step in front of the judges on June 13th, it’s time to lock in your spot and clear the first major hurdle.

✨Pre-testing is your opportunity to demonstrate your forms, step sparring, and techniques to the instructors.

It ensures you are completely sharp, confident, and on track to succeed on the big day.

What to bring to the mat tonight:
✨ Full Focus: Know your poomsae sequence inside and out so you can focus on power, not just the next move.

✨ Sharp Details: Instructors are looking for clean stance transitions, tight hand techniques, and crisp tracking.

✨ Maximum Intensity: Give every block, kick, and kihap 100% of your effort.

Let’s earn the opportunity to test this Saturday, Mireu crew!

See you on the mat! 💪🔥

Blue Belts: your path to the June 13th testing is getting exciting!

Today, we are breaking down the first ITF blue belt pattern: Won-Hyo Tul. 🔵✨

Consisting of 28 movements, this pattern is named after the noted monk Won-Hyo, who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the year 686 A.D. Because of its history, this form is all about smooth, meditative focus punctuated by sharp, explosive power.

It’s a true test of mental discipline and physical control!

Won-Hyo steps up the challenge by introducing complex hand combinations, high side kicks, and demanding stance changes.

What the Judges are Looking for on June 13th:
✨ The Double Forearm Block & Stance Shift: Watch your footwork right at the beginning! Moving from a closed stance into a rock-solid L-stance requires absolute control over your center of gravity!

✨ Smooth Transitions: The judges want to see a clear, seamless transition as you move through your Double Knife-hand Blocks into Kwon-Soo. Maintain absolute control over your center of gravity in the Back stance. Don't rush the shift, and ensure your hands and feet snap into position at the exact same fraction of a second!

✨ Side Kicks: The judges want to see a clean chamber, an explosive extension with a sharp foot sword (balkal), and a controlled re-chamber before you drop into the next stance. No rushing!

Let’s keep pushing, Mireu family! 👊🔥

Green High Belts: your journey toward the June 13th testing is stepping up!
Today, we are breaking down Taegeuk Sam Jang (3).✨

This pattern represents Ri—the element of fire and sun. It is all about passion, clarity, and explosive energy. The judges aren't just looking to see if you know the steps; they want to see that burning martial arts spirit in every single movement!

Sam Jang introduces rapid transitions, quick counter-attacks, and your very first single knife-hand strikes. It’s where your training starts looking less like basic drills and more like real self-defense.

What the Judges are Looking for on June 13th:
✨ Knife-Hand Strikes & Blocks: Keep your fingers tightly pressed together, your thumbs tucked, and strike with the outer edge of the hand. Precision is everything!

✨ The Kick-and-Punch Combo: Don't lose your balance after the front kick. Re-chamber quickly so you can drop right into a stable front stance and fire off your double punches.

✨ Back Stance Stability: Your weight needs to be shifted 70/30 to your back leg during the knife-hand guarding blocks. Keep your center of gravity low and don't lean!

Take a few extra minutes before class to smooth out those transitions and bring that fire to the mat tonight. Let's keep training hard! 👊🔥

Green belts, your time to shine is coming up on Saturday, June 13th! 🌟

As we dial in our focus for testing, let’s dive into the meaning behind your pattern: Do-San

Consisting of 24 movements, this pattern is named after the pseudonym of the great patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1878–1938). He dedicated his entire life to furthering the education of Korea and independent movement.

When you perform Do-San, you aren't just demonstrating blocks and strikes; you are channeling that exact spirit of dedication, passion, and lifelong learning!

What the Judges are Looking for on June 13th:
✨ Kwon-soo: Your fingertips should spear your opponent's midline at the solar plexus, so focus on where your fingertips land.

✨ Seamless Transitions: whether it's your Hammerfist to Middle Punch or turning 180 degrees into Back Fist, focus on your details without rushing through. Find your breath and balance to feel more in control throughout each movement. And remember to re-chamber after your front kicks without rushing into your double punches.

💥💥Training Tip: Try practicing just the footwork for these sections without using your arms. Once your hips and feet are transitioning smoothly on the floor, locking in the power of the blocks and strikes becomes second nature!

Our countdown to testing on Saturday, June 13th continues!

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on our Orange High belts preparing for their next big step with Taegeuk Ee Jang (2). ✨

Taegeuk Ee Jang represents Tae, the concept of a joyful, serene lake. It teaches us that true strength isn't just about force; it’s about maintaining a calm, clear mind under pressure. Don't let the peaceful meaning fool you, though this form introduces some major upgrades to your sparring foundation!

Whether you’re a beginner perfecting your very first steps or a high rank sharpening your basics, Ee Jang is a beautiful test of control and fluidity.

What the Judges are Looking for on June 13th:
✨ High Front Kicks: Your kicks shouldn't just be high, they need to be executed with balance, proper chambering, and snappy re-chambering before you place your foot down.
✨ Seamless Transitions: Watch your stance changes. Moving cleanly from a walking stance into a deep front stance requires strong hips and a rock-solid core.

Take an extra 5 minutes on the mat tonight to smooth out your transitions and crisp up those high strikes. Let's keep pushing, Mireu family! 👊🔥

As we push toward testing on Saturday, June 13th, it’s time to talk about your testing pattern: Dan-Gun!

Consisting of 21 movements, this pattern is named after the holy Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year 2333 B.C. But behind the fierce techniques is a fascinating origin story!

Did you know the legend of Dan-Gun's mother? 🐻

According to Korean mythology, a tiger and a bear lived in a cave and prayed to the divine king, Hwanung, to become human. He gave them a test: stay out of the sunlight for 100 days and eat only sacred mugwort and 20 cloves of garlic. The tiger grew impatient and quit, but the bear persevered with incredible discipline. On the 21st day, she was transformed into a beautiful woman named Ungnyeo (the bear-woman).

She later gave birth to Dan-Gun, who grew up to establish the first Korean kingdom!

Testing Focus Points for June 13th:
✨ High Punches: Dan-Gun is unique because it has all high punches. Make sure your striking hand tracks straight to your own philtrum level!

Channel your inner perseverance this week and bring that legendary focus to class! 👊🔥

To our high ranks and black belts: When was the last time you practiced Taegeuk Il Jang? 🤔

With testing coming up on Saturday, June 13th, it’s easy to get hyper-focused on your highest, most complex patterns. But true mastery means never outgrowing your foundation.

Taegeuk Il Jang (1) represents Keon—the beginning of creation, heaven, and light.

Testing is coming up June 13th! Be ready!

Why we love this video:
It's great for the kids, but also if you know your form, but need help with your timing, listen to this video. It makes a noise for each technique!
